Five Steps to Career Planning
Below are the Five Steps to Career Planning. I know that part of this is redundant but answer anyway and be honest about this because you may look back on your actions someday and have regrets, and that would really be a shame to experience.
1. Reveal your Passion
2. Timeline to your Goal
3. Strength Inventory
4. What if….?
5. The Road to Heaven
Let’s talk about this first before you begin:
#1 Reveal your Passion
What is your ultimate passion in life?
This might be a repeated question, but it will decide the path that you have chosen for the rest of your working days.

#2 Timeline to your Goal
What is your timeline goal?
The timeline is the length of time it will take to achieve your ultimate goal. If you choose Nurse Practitioner then you must look at how long it will take you to get the degree, which includes the number of hours necessary for your specialty (which if not known then you need to look it up). Do not just put down two years because if you are working it is improbable that you will work full-time during the schooling. This is why I am asking you to investigate the details. Just because a school tells you that you can graduate in two years that is not necessarily the case. Also, if you choose something like CRNA, they will not let you work so what is the plan for those years that you will be in school?

#3 Strength Inventory
What are your strengths?
Let’s look at your strengths, and with this section, let us try and be honest about it. It may have nothing to do with nursing but list it anyway. We want to be able to look back on this and not be remiss that we left something out.

#4 What if….?
What are the “What ifs?” you might ask yourself?
Well, this is a rather complicated section because we are going to include financials here, and they are going to be accurate because you are going to look up or investigate an exact cost. Also, we are going to include something called Opportunity Cost, which is the money that you would be losing while you are pursuing something else. As mentioned before, to be a CRNA, you would pay tuition, books, and other expenses AND you are going to give up 2-3 years of salary that would make during that time while you are in school. Make a list of these expenses. The same goes for any other advanced degree in nursing. Be honest because it does not get easier as you go along this path.

#5 The Road to Heaven
Who will help me get on the road to heaven?
The road to heaven is not lined with gold sometimes, so here again, we are going to be honest about this. This is the support system that you have amassed over the years. Sometimes less is more in these circumstances, so we need to be honest. Sometimes what we call support should be supported, but for whatever reason, they are not. For example, a spouse may be listed as support, but when you have three children, there comes a point in everyone’s life where you just cannot do this anymore. You need to think very hard about this one because this is probably the hardest one to answer.
