Football in New York: Mission and Vision
The overall mission of the Football In New York program is to create an experience that young boys can participate in and feel safe while learning life skills. As Garner summarizes, the mission is in place to make the name of God be known through organization (2017, p. 100). Some of the skills that will be taught are how to dress for important occasions like job interviews, special dinners, recruiting dinners, and even draft day by the grace of God they make it there. The mission is to create an environment where these young boys can feel comfortable learning life skills and can also improve in their sport that they love. My plan for the on-field experience is to have current and or former collegiate and professional football players have drills and film sessions for their respected position groups. During their film sessions, the athletes will be able to develop a positive and encouraging relationship with the players. Overall, the mission of creating a positive and safe experience for the participants is implemented each moment that the clinic is occurring.
Proverbs 27:17 states, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” This scripture is mission verse because it is a reminder that each day participants will be invited into a safe, positive, and uplifting environment. For every week, we will have a word of the week that the kids should try to pursue every day. At the end of each day, we will challenge them to do something outside of our clinic to perform that word of the week, where it be on or off the field. Another way that Football in New York will fulfill the mission verse is to lead by example through our life skills and our football activities. For example, when we are doing drills, the professional athletes will be doing the same exact drill with the participant. This shows the participants that the coaches care about their performance and getting better. The professional athletes will also lead by example through the life skills section. Mogale states, “ a society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they never sit in” (Mogale, 2019). This quote is a reminder that God calls us to invest in the younger generation and sharpen the next generation.
The overall vision for Football In New York is to expand the program to other areas in New York. There are young boys that deserve to have these experiences no matter where they are from. It’s no doubt that everyone wants to make it to the NFL, but the reality is the chances are slim. Therefore, by teaching off the field skills lessons, the young men will gain the confidence to be a follower of Christ and also a contributor in the society. Manhattan, Queens, Staten Island, and the Bronx are the other boroughs that Football in New York would like to expand to in the future. The vision is to create a program with a purpose to eventually expand to different locations within New York City.
Fulfilling a vision will take a few years to complete as it will be the long-term goal. The goal to expand to different boroughs will need to be made possible by connecting with other professional athletes and community leaders that will be open to having Football in New York events. According to “Creating and Managing Community in a community football club” Torchia states, “community is a shelter where we do not fear of being deceived by others, because there will always be a member giving us a helping hand” (2019). By having Football in New York be throughout the entire city, it will create a shelter for young boys who have the will and desire to be successful in life both in the sport of football but also through the life skills learned in the clinic.

Mission Statement
Our Mission is to provide all young people of the Memphis community, who may face struggles daily, with unbelievable and countless opportunities to prosper through accessible sports programs. We aim to help them develop their interpersonal skills, self-confidence, educational mindset, their love for their community and their faith through ministry. Leading them to be model Memphians to provide the next generation with even better tools. An article from Global Sport Matters, that helped shaped our mission, shares, The report found that youth who played sports had higher levels of self-esteem, self-efficacy, and social support and lower levels of depression, loneliness, self-derogation, and fatalism than their peers who didn’t participate in sport. (Burtka 2023)
Vision Statement
Produce a second to none experience when it comes to Sport Outreach Organizations instilling development and successful in each and every kid who comes across our program. Providing all the tools and then some for them to reach their full potential. Envisioning them graduating with them achieving all personal goals, prepared to dominate success, being a phenomenal person, and a lover of Christ. An article from LeagueApps, which helped us shape our vision, states, positively affecting kids’ lives is about more than just teaching them the ins and outs of the sports they’re playing. It also means providing them and their coaches and parents with the opportunity to connect and engage with one another and with kids in other communities. A successful youth sports organization is focused on developing the complete athlete on and off the field and ensuring that all kids in your community have access to the benefits of sport. (Wickes 2023)
Organizational Structure
When looking at the organizational structure of our program we would love to have a great group of people who are willing to work every day knowing that the work they put in daily is for a greater good and to change the lives of many. We want to invest in the city continuously, so we want to make sure the people who are within the program serving our city are indeed people born and raised in Memphis. We want to have an authentic We would love to have the foundation of having an CEO and President as our main two heads of the program. We will utilize an executive director that will be in house every day to work with our kids and developing our staff within. As we grow, we know we will develop kids who will want to give back to their community and the kids who are now in similar shoes they once were. We would love to hire formal members of our program to be our program directors to make sure we have the same continuity throughout the years for us to come. Then we will have Youth Captains followed by their volunteers. Our volunteers will be the kids who came through this program at a young age that are now in high school and want to have the opportunity to give back while they are in college or immediately after graduation. They will shadow our Youth Captains on a daily basis to have a better understanding of the job.
Staffing and Funding
When diving into the funding of our program, the best route for us to pursue is through grants, scholarships, donations, fundraising, partnerships, and collaborations. When looking at the opportunities to get grants and sponsorships through government agencies and foundations that support community development and willing to support our sport initiatives. When also working with donations and fundraising, we must advertise our mission to people with like-minded ideas to push or initiative. We can set up a one-time donation or recurring donations for those who continuously want to support our program. We would also host charity events throughout the city throughout the years in to share our mission and vision to attract people who want to support. Lastly looking at partnerships and collaborations, many big name organizations have companies that have warehouses in the city of Memphis. Reaching out to them seeking help to develop our program and kids could be beneficial, whether it is a monetary donation or a physical donation it gives us the opportunity to develop the program we are building. An article from Medium shares, Well-funded youth sports programs have the potential to engage the community, garnering support from local businesses, sponsors, and volunteers. Community involvement contributes to the sustainability and success of the program, creating a sense of pride and unity. (Harris 2024) A biblical passage that has stuck out to me when working through this and the importance of running a functional sports outreach program is John 3:30, He must increase, but I must decrease. Serving the Lord, it is crucial for me to step back and let the lord take over and flourish. Living through his name and his glory brings us much more than just speaking of it. Let him use us as a demonstration and his word will glorify everything we do.

Mission and Vision Assignment
Tyriq Smith

For a non-profit to be successful there needs to be an effective plan in place to navigate
the rigors of starting a business and funding it. It’s hard to receive any funding or donations
without a clean-cut mission, vision, and business plan to present to potential donators or
investors. You also need devoted staff and leadership that share the vision and mission of the
non-profit (Eydi, 2008). When people by into something the outcome is almost always much
better, and you get the best efforts of everyone involved. All non-profits start with an effective
mission and vision statement that will follow the company and guide its decision making.
The non-profits mission statement for my sports outreach program is to use sports as a
tool to bring inner- city kids ages 10-18 together for the purpose of promoting Jesus and the
importance of education while mentoring, creating leaders, and premier athletes of tomorrow.
Often these children are faced with tough background that they have no control over. They can
potentially fall victim to their environment and go down the wrong roads. This program is a way
to keep these kids off the streets and give them a safe haven to explore all of themselves freely
on and off the sports field.
The non-profits vison is to give every member a safe training and educational space and
to expand on their physical, and academic abilities. Through this program members would be
able to speak to church mentors, therapist, teachers and have access to state-of-the-art fields and
courts for all sports, while also having coaches, and support staff available to help. In this sports
outreach program, we will focus on spiritual and mental growth through Christ and bible studies
just as much as physical and athletic ability’s making a well-rounded young adult ready for all
the world has to throw at them.
Of course, as a nonprofit one of the biggest things to figure out first is where the money
would come from to fund the company. Fortunately for nonprofits like this, they are eligible for
3
grants from the government at the federal, state, and local levels (Luksetich, 2007). Another way
is non-profits can register for a 501(c) (3) permit and receive money from foundations if they
have a cause or particular demographic group, they serve that they support (Luksetich, 2007).
Not to mention many people with money and believers of the mission often find themselves
giving donations not always of money but also things needed to successfully fund the company
which is greatly needed to keep things running on the day to day. For example, a good way to
obtain daily food for the kids would be partnerships with local groceries stores that wouldn’t
mind donating food. This can be done on the daily as many stores throw food away every day.
There are also opportunities for income by fundraising, investors, creating sports leagues,
sponsorships, as well as renting the facilities for use to the community for a return. There has
even been some non-profit’s creating a clothing line that generates considerable income.
Overall, there is usually always a tight budget but with the support of the community and
backing of all levels of government the non-profit can see long term success.
Organizational structure is very important to the success of the company. To start a board
of directors would be needed to ensure that all laws are being abided by so that grants and funds
can be received. Careful consideration should be made when implementing a board because of
the power and information they are privileged to. Many cases of company embezzlement and
thief often start at this level which is why it is important to have thorough background checks on
these individuals (Bruni‐Bossio & Kaczur, 2021). They would also play an instrumental part in
deciding which programs receive funding. Then there is the CEO position under them who
would be the leader of the organization’s operations and responsible for its overall effectiveness.
Often this person is appointed by the board or owner and would be capable of managing and
directing a variety of task as needed. This person would help implement guidelines, budgets, and
4
a plan to success in the non-profit. Next would be program leaders or mangers. These individuals
would be responsible for the overall success of their respective program as well as ensuring
every member has what they need. For this non-profit there would be several directors such as
finance team, staffing or HR team, member life skills, sports, and activity’s team, educations
developments team, spiritual devotion team, community outreach team, and a mental health
team. Some would be bigger than others depending on the members in the community’s need.
From there it would be positions such as therapist, teachers, athletic coaches, mentors, and
church personnel that would be working in each program. At this point the development of some
type of volunteer program would be important to overall success. Anyone that shares the
programs mission and values and has a love to help underprivileged kids can and would like to
donate their time to help as a support staff would be allowed to participate. This would leave
funds for specialist that will need to be paid such as teachers, trainers, and managers.
All non-profits start with an effective mission and vision statement that will follow the
company and guide its decision making. For this reason, it is very important to be as clear as
possible when describing both. This will be what draws people to the non-profit and ultimately
what it is known for in the community and abroad. By setting a concreate organizational
structure, mission and vison for the company, and ideas for staffing and funding it gives the
nonprofit a chance to be successful and have organization that can be sustained over time.
