Discussion Guidelines (Read Before Posting)
Please review the discussion board guidelines outlined below. You must follow these guidelines to receive full points.
Online discussions will be posted in CANVAS. You will a) post a response to the weekly discussion topic and b) respond to two (2) peer discussion posts. Unless otherwise instructed, the parameters for a student’s original postings are 250-500 words. The limit for each required reply post is 100-300 words. Please keep the word count in this range. Post these responses in the designated portion of CANVAS (do not attach a Word Document). The purpose of these parameters is to promote writing that is both thorough and concise. As a rule of thumb, your responses to the questions should involve thoughtful reflections on the issues and topical examples rather than regurgitating facts and details in the reading.
When posting to the discussion boards please ensure you follow proper etiquette. Posts should be well thought out and courteous. It is important to use proper grammar and avoid text slang and shortcuts. Posts should be substantial, and replies should be constructive. It is ok to disagree but replies need to be courteous and hold evidence as to why one thinks that way. The process should be thought provoking and supportive of different viewpoints. Understanding multiple viewpoints is indicative of true knowledge.
The discussion posts are your opportunity to engage with fellow students and wrestle with the subject matter, about which many of you have some initial ideas but are not entirely comfortable. It is the replacement for in-class discussion. Make the most of this time by interacting to a high degree with your fellow students. As iron sharpens iron, this is where you exercise your critical thinking skills.
The main decision criteria for the initial post are that the student offers relevant comments that advance the breadth and depth of the class’s understanding of the material, the postings demonstrate the integration or application of material into work or other settings, and postings are supported by evidence (readings, research, or personal experience) that address the central question.
The main criteria for the follow-up posts are: Provide relevant feedback and commentary on fellow student postings that offer both encouragement and challenge; elaborate and clarify the initial position in response to other student commentaries; post new areas for discussion that enhance the depth or breadth of the analysis; postings are supported by evidence (readings, research or personal experience) that address the central case question.
Interaction between students is an important part of this course and requires prompt postings and responses. In an attempt to be efficient with our time and considerate of everyone’s schedules—even beyond the requirements of this course—we will operate under a consistent time structure for posting assignments and responses to online discussions.

This week, pray for your local government leaders, both appointed and elected, for wisdom and discernment in their decision-making.
Please answer the following questions:
1. Describe at least 2 of the LOCAL governments where you live, work and/or go to school. Include the form of government (city, county, school, etc.) that they are. Are they located within a larger metropolitan area. What is the population? How was the population determined?
2. Are the officials within these local governments elected or appointed? How many are part of the governing body? (# of council members, # of school board – appointed or elected, etc.).
3. Does any of the information in the readings apply to your community? If so, please discuss.
4. In the Bible, there are several instances of Census’ being required or being taken. Census surveys in our time are also important. What was a purpose of the census in Biblical times and how might it relate to modern times?
