The helping Project
Overview:Helping feels good. Study upon study shows that prosocial acts not only benefit the recipient, but also the provider of assistance. These benefits can be tangible and come in the form of material reciprocity, but also emotional, without any particular expectation that the recipient will return the favor or even “pay it forward” to someone else. Thus, whether you selfishly want to feel good or genuinely give a damn about other people, you (and others) stand to benefit from helpful acts. In addition, now that you have learned a good deal about human behavior and mental processes, you are in a unique position to understand people, and to use that knowledge to help them. Thus, the current assignment is intended to direct you through the steps involved in leveraging your psychological knowledge for the good of humanity.
Your job is to use the knowledge that you have gained in this course to help another person (e.g., a friend, family member, or complete stranger) by planning, offering, and documenting some sort of tangible effort to assist him or her.
First, you will need to identify a person you would like to help and a specific problem he or she is having, or an area in life that he or she would like to improve. For example, you may have a friend who wishes to improve his or her grades in Algebra, or a family member who would like to lose weight, or an acquaintance who is experiencing conflict with a co-worker.
In step 2, you will identify and describe in detail a course theory, principle, or study finding that is applicable to this person’s problem. The concept you choose can be general or specific, andyour description of it should be technical and derived from academic sources. Your description will take the form of a 5-page, Times New Roman, double-spaced paper that you will submit to me toward the 2/3 point of the semester.
Next, you will develop a specific plan for how you intend to help the person using your knowledge of the concept. You will need to identify the specific goal you have for the person (e.g., a change in behavior, a newfound perspective on an issue, measured success in some area of life), describe precisely how you plan to effect the desired change, and clarify how you will know that you have been successful.
The penultimate step is to execute the plan and document the results of your efforts. The execution should follow the plan you laid out in the previous step. The documentation should consist of photographic or video-recorded evidence of the person you are helping that show him or her working toward a goal or obvious indications that some sort of tangible progress has been made. For example, if you decide to help your friend do better on his or her Algebra tests, you could take pictures while your friend is using your suggested method of study or take before-and-after pictures of his or her exams. Alternatively, you could record your friend giving a testimonial as to the efficacy of your helping efforts.
Your final task is to step back and reflect on the quality of your work and the outcome of your efforts to provide assistance. Write a 3-page, Times New Roman, double-spaced reflection paper that addresses whether your plan worked. What aspects of it worked and did not work? Also answer the question: How would you improve your plan or the execution of your plan in order for you to be successful in the future? Submit that to me via Blackboard.
Instructions:
❖ Step 1 : Identify a person you would like to help and the problem you would like to help him or her with.Explore ideas for a course concept. (HELPING A FRIEND LOSE WEIGHT)
❖ Step 2 : Identify a course theory, principle, or study finding that is applicable to this person’s problem.Write a 5-page, APA-style, Times New Roman, 12 point font, double-spaced description of the concept. This description should include a detailed definition, illustrative examples for clarification, methods used to measure or study the concept, and any significant research findings. You should write this so that an intelligent lay person can gain a clear and reasonably detailed understanding of your concept. Be sure not to plagiarize any portion of your paper. Note: Only discuss the topic itself, do not describe your plan for helping yet. Submit to me via Blackboard.
Step 3 : Plan for how you intend to help the person using your knowledge of the concept. Write a 2-page, APA-style, Times New Roman, 12 point font, double-spaced description of this plan. Submit via Blackboard your plan that addresses the following:
• Identify the specific goal you have for the person
• Explain how the topic you identified in Step 2 is relevant to that goal
• Describe precisely how you plan to effect the desired change
• Clarify how you will know that you have been successful
Step 4 : Execute your plan and document the results of your efforts. This can take two forms: 1. A Powerpoint presentation containing photos and descriptive text that documents the way the process unfolded or 2. Video-recorded documentation of your helping efforts.
Step 5 : Reflect on what happened. Write a 3-page, Times New Roman, 12 point font, double-spaced reflection paper that addresses the following.
• What was it like to complete this assignment? What parts of it were enjoyable, frustrating, etc.? Did you learn anything about yourself or the person you helped?
• Did your plan work? What aspects of it worked and did not work?
• How would you improve your plan or the execution of your plan in order for you to be (even) more successful in the future?
