Some of the prominent trends observed include electronic health records (EHRs), telemedicine, artificial intelligence (AI) for diagnostics and predictive analytics, wearable health devices, and remote patient monitoring systems like tele monitoring (Mumtaz et al., 2023). Telemonitoring A particular healthcare technology trend that I have noticed being used in my healthcare organization is tele monitoring. Tele monitoring involves the use of digital technology to collect medical and other health data from individuals in one location and electronically transmit this information securely to healthcare providers in a different location for assessment and recommendations (Liljeroos & Arkkukangas, 2023). This technology allows for continuous monitoring of patients, particularly those with chronic conditions, without the need for frequent hospital visits. Various types of sensors and measures are commonly used, including electrocardiograms (ECG), blood pressure monitors, blood glucose monitors, body temperature sensors, weight scales, and oxygen saturation monitors. Challenges and Risks While telemonitoring offers significant benefits, it also comes with inherent challenges and risks. One primary challenge is ensuring data security and patient privacy, as sensitive health information is transmitted over digital networks. Additionally, there is the issue of data interoperability, where different systems may not seamlessly share and integrate patient information, leading to fragmented care (Palmieri Serrano et al., 2023). Telemonitoring also requires reliable internet access and digital literacy among patients, which can be a barrier for some populations. Other challenges include increased workload for healthcare providers, higher patient anxiety, potential data inaccuracies, and financial issues (Palmieri Serrano et al., 2023). Benefit: One significant benefit of telemonitoring is the improvement in patient outcomes through continuous and real-time monitoring. Patients with chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, or heart disease can have their vital signs monitored remotely, allowing for timely interventions and adjustments to treatment plans. This reduces the need for hospital visits and can prevent complications. According to Health Recovery Solutions (2024), studies show that heart failure patients who receive remote vital monitoring experience a reduced risk of all-cause mortality and fewer heart failurerelated hospitalizations. In ICU, we monitor all our patients and can see patient vitals at all times to ensure patient safety. Risk: A potential risk associated with telemonitoring is data security. The transmission of health data over networks can be vulnerable to cyberattacks, leading to unauthorized access to sensitive patient information. Compliance with legislation like the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is crucial to ensure data protection, and breaches can result in severe penalties and loss of patient trust (Palmieri Serrano et al., 2023). Promising Healthcare Technology Trends Among the various healthcare technology trends, tele monitoring holds significant promise for nursing practice. Tele monitoring facilitates continuous patient monitoring and early detection of potential health issues, allowing for proactive management and timely interventions. According to Health Recovery Solutions (2024), this technology also empowers patients to take an active role in managing their health, improving adherence to treatment plans. Improvements in Patient Care Outcomes, Efficiencies, and Data Management Patient Care Outcomes: Tele monitoring improves patient outcomes by providing continuous oversight and early detection of health issues. For instance, patients with heart failure can have their weight, blood pressure, and other vital signs monitored daily, allowing for immediate adjustments in treatment to prevent hospitalizations (Health Recovery Solutions, 2024). Efficiencies: Tele monitoring enhances operational efficiencies by reducing the need for in-person visits and hospital readmissions. Healthcare providers can monitor multiple patients remotely, optimizing resource allocation and focusing on patients who require immediate attention. Data Management: Tele monitoring contributes to better data management by continuously collecting and transmitting patient data to healthcare providers. Technology plays a vital role in the evolution of healthcare in many ways, including patient portals. As a healthcare provider and a patient, I encountered patient portals from different perspectives. Through this experience, I have come to understand the risks and benefits of implementing patient portals in a healthcare setting. Healthcare providers must recognize the potential risks and benefits of patient portals to provide the best patient outcomes. A Potential Challenge and Risks and Benefits Patient portals are a key part of modern healthcare technology, providing patients with secure online access to their health information. A potential challenge of implementing patient portals is the controversy of the immediate release of results among clinicians. While working in a hospital in Ohio from 2019 to 2021, I experienced a change that patients started able to view clinical notes, lab results, and imaging reports immediately because of the 21st Century Cures Act, which required that providers give patients rapid access to their health record (Leonard et al., 2022). The risk associated with patients accessing their medical records immediately before clinicians have a chance to interpret them is patients misinterpreting the results. The benefit of immediately assessing medical records before the clinicians view them is patients being proactive in their healthcare resulting in seeking timely medical advice or interventions. Among 69 clinicians and 57 patients, Leonard et al. (2022) found that 62.7% of clinicians agreed that the immediate release of results is more confusing than helpful, whereas only 15.8% of patients agreed with this statement. This shows the disagreement among the clinicians and between patients and clinicians. Even with the disagreement, most hospitals have patient portals for patients to access results immediately. Implementing patient portals can have potential risks and benefits on data safety, legislation, and patient care. The risk to data safety is data breaches such as hacking attacks and identity theft, which are the most mentioned reasons for concerns about privacy and security from 734 patients (Son & Nahm, 2023). On the other hand, Son and Nahm (2023) found that the most mentioned reasons for trusting privacy and security are the protected log-in process and trust in health care providers. Each healthcare organization should have robust security measures to protect patient data. For legislation, ensuring secure and controlled access to health information via patient portals can help healthcare organizations comply with regulations like the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) to prevent legal penalties and fines. Lastly, the risk on patient care is potentially creating disparities in healthcare access and quality due to not all patients having equal access to or experience with digital tools, whereas the benefit on patient care is improving patient outcomes through timely decisions and interventions by providers due to the active advocating from patients after receiving the immediate results. By carefully managing these aspects, healthcare organizations can utilize patient portals to enhance patient care while safeguarding data and complying with legislative requirements. Promising Healthcare Technology Trends Despite the risks associated with patient portals, this technology has the potential to positively impact nursing practice. First, patient portals can enhance patient engagement to be their advocators while speaking up after knowing their health data via portals to take an active role in managing their health. Secondly, patient portals can provide education and resources that nurses can use to enhance patients’ understanding and management of their health. Lastly, patient portals can ensure accurate and up-to-date documentation of patient interactions, which is crucial for legal and regulatory compliance. By integrating these digital tools, nurses can provide more effective, personalized, and efficient care. Improvements in patient care outcomes, efficiencies, and data management can be created through patient portals. Patient portals allow patients with chronic conditions to regularly input their health data, such as blood pressure and glucose levels. Gagnon et al. (2020) developed CONCERTO+, a patient portal for chronic disease management in primary care which clinicians can provide timely interventions and adjustments to treatment plans based on the health data. This leads to better patient care outcomes through disease management and reduced complications. Besides patient outcomes, another improvement is efficiency resulting from communication via secure messages. Hefner et al. (2022) stated that by utilizing a secure messages function on patient portals, the communication between patients and physicians is more efficient. This reduces unnecessary appointments and saves time for both patients and providers. Lastly, patient portals streamline data with automated administrative tasks such as appointment scheduling, prescription refills, and access to lab results. This frees up the provider’s time to focus more on direct patient care. Patient portals enhance patient care outcomes, improve efficiencies in healthcare delivery, and streamline data management, ultimately leading to a more effective and patient-centered healthcare system.
