Social Disorganization Theory
Post1: In order to understand Social Disorganization Theory, one must first acknowledge the definition of such a theory. Social Disorganization is defined as a sudden influx of a large number of people in and out of a neighborhood that create an environment allowing people to contribute more to crime than inappropriate behaviors of individuals who are abnormal (Shaw & McKay, 1969). For example, lately there has been a lot of vandalism to cars on my job. In addition, there are some project homes positioned directly behind the facility where I work. Many African American families (who come from low socio-economic backgrounds) with young children/boys, live in those projects. And I often here my co-wokers blaming those little black boys for breaking into their cars. Yet, the reality is there are plenty of strangers (i.e. meth-heads, homeless people, and adult criminals) walking thru the neighborhod as well very late at night who could be breaking into their cars. But, no one believes that. Instead, they blame those boys. In my opinion, this is an example of Social Disorganization Theory.
The principles of Social Disorganization Theory shows the mechanisms of social neighborhood extremes and social behavior in terms of how crime and safety are provided. The theory states that Social disorganization theory is one of the most enduring place-based theories of crime (Wickes & Sydes, 2017). Shaw and McKay (1969), state this theory shifted criminological scholarship from a focus on the pathology of people to the pathology of places. Shaw and McKay also demonstrated that delinquency did not randomly occur throughout the city but was concentrated in disadvantaged neighborhoods in—or adjacent to—areas of industry or commerce. Based off of collective group classifying efforts to shame the public into following surveillance and order, the more individualism became a formal necessity as social coercion- meaning reward the law-abiders and punish the rule-breakers by the statues of community value.
In order for the principle of social disorganization theory to be applied to improving community safety and reduce crime in high crime neighborhoods, there are a few things cities and communities can do. For one, more visible policing in neighborhoods where there appears to be poverty and crime. This could allow the neighborhood to feel more protected and safer. This can also possibly scare criminals into not entering the neighborhoods. Another possible solution is for communities (i.e., schools, churches) to set up more youth programs like after school tutoring and extra-curricular activities that allow children to feel safe and parents that work late feel safe and secure about their children while working. A final possible solution would be to bring more jobs into the communities just as they are in rich neighborhoods. This include bringing fast food restaurants on certain sides of town. Allowing African American people to get loans to build stores rather than only Indians as this is what I only see in my neighboorhood. This may allow the poorer communities to feel more stable and in control of their community’s outcome, to include crime and violence.
