Choose a topic of interest to you that relates to Subsarahian Africa. Here are some options to explore your topic:
happening – current event or historic
experience – reflect on a trip you’ve taken, interview a person who has cultural knowledge of the region (e.g. a family member or friend), attend an event associated with cultures from the region, eat at a restaurant or make a recipe associated with cultures from the region
creative expression – analyze a film, video game, music, book, comic, visual art, architecture, etc.
Find at least three different sources that cover the topic. Use reputable sources such as the textbook, news sources, academic articles, and interviews. Cite these sources in your references.
Create a map of what’s happening related to your topic. (50 points)
Using ArcGIS Online (http://www.arcgis.com), create a map that illustrates the topic you selected. Your map should help the reader understand the topic and offer an informed geographic analysis of what’s going on.
Add map features (through “add notes” function) to indicate on your map the happenings that are relevant to your topic and your analysis by using symbols and/or colors (e.g. markers for key locations, arrows to represent movement, shaded areas to show the extent of a phenomenon). (20 points)
Use at least two layers on your map that help us understand your story. Use “search for layers” or “browse living atlas layers” functions to find useful layers. ArcGIS comes with many built-in layers of map data. For example there are layers with world religions by country, average household incomes, population densities, etc. (20 points)
Keep in mind the key features of a good map as discussed in class and be sure these are included: a descriptive title and a legend. (10 points)
Create an ArcGIS Story Map with your map, an image to help illustrate your event, and a written narrative about your selected current event using complete sentences (about 500 words with in-text parenthetical citations to support your arguments.): (50 points)
Provide a geographic analysis of your topic. What is happening where, why, and what of it? Briefly describe the topic, but put more emphasis on explaining why it’s happening and why it’s important. Look for patterns, trends, and spatial relationships. Consider proximity, distance, and connectivity. Examine the cultural, economic, historic, and political context of the issue. Explore relations between society and the natural environment. Discuss pertinent findings from the map you’ve made. (30 points)
Use at least three specific course terms and define them in your own words. Identify your terms, highlight, underline, or emphasize the terms (e.g. this could include key terms highlighted in lectures and vocabulary words from the textbook such as nation/state, globalization, irredentism, etc.) (10 points)
Briefly indicate your thoughts on and reactions to the event based upon what you have learned in this course. (5 points)
