Introduction
For this discussion, you will have the opportunity to engage in field observation and reflect on your experiences and implicit biases. Observation is a type of research in which a researcher observes the ongoing behavior of individuals and groups. It is a social research technique that involves the direct observation of phenomena in its natural setting. In any type of field research, there is the opportunity for implicit bias, which refers to the attitudes or stereotypes that affect our understanding, actions, and decisions in an unconscious manner. This will be discussed further in the discussion. What you learn from this exercise will help to build your understanding of how individuals or groups behave the way they do in society, which in turn may help you to more thoroughly understand your societal issue.
Initial Post Instructions
To begin this discussion, review the Observation Field Research, Advantages and Limitations of Observation, and What are Social Norms resources to help develop your understanding of this research approach and topic. After reviewing these resources and conducting any additional outside research you might find valuable, visit an organization in your community (e.g., restaurant, retail store, shopping center, etc.) and observe (for at least 2 hours) the social norms of individuals and/or groups in this environment and provide responses to the following questions:
During your observation (for at least two hours), take descriptive and reflective notes of your encounters, observations, and experiences and upload them within the table, which contains an example. Then, upload your completed table to this discussion for your peers and instructor to review.
Based on this exercise, what organization in your community did you choose and discuss why you made this selection?
Explain whether you observed the social norms of individuals and/or groups and discuss why you made this decision?
Explain some of the social norms you observed and discuss what you found as most interesting and why.
Based on the social norms you observed, were they what you would expect to see? Do you believe your implicit bias had any influence on how you perceive your observed social norms? Discuss why or why not?
