English Heglars I Dont Care if You Recycle
1. Some students interpret Heglar’s essay, “I Work in the Environmental Movement: I Don’t Care If You Recycle” as, “There’s no use in recycling (or changing light bulbs, or installing solar panels, or adopting a vegan diet). There’s not much the individual can do.” But is that Heglar’s point? What is the basic argument that Heglar makes in her article? Write a one-paragraph summary of at least 100 words that explains her argument. You need to read to the end of the article to really understand her main idea. It is not what the title implies.
2. Do you agree, disagree, or both agree and disagree with Heglar’s point? Write a one-paragraph argument of at least 100 words that explains your answer to this question.

Heglar is not arguing that we as an individual should give up and throw in the towel when it comes to trying to fight climate change, that recycling, avoiding traveling by car, using LED lightbulbs, and going vegan is completely useless at this point. Heglar does not agree with this mentality at all, Heglar is really trying to convey that we have had the blame shifted on us individuals, that we have a victim mentality leading us to adopt these nihilistic and guilt ridden viewpoints. She has no issue in whether or not we adopt these lifestyle aspects, what she really wants us to do is be a part of the movement and understand the bigger picture. Its not each other we should be blaming amongst, its the system. Corporations and governments are the biggest impact on our environment and our only fault is that we individuals allow them to get away with destroying the climate. What Heglar truly believes we should be part of the movement to oppose the system, rather than fight amongst those who have no choice but the participate within it, not nitpicking at small things we in our daily lives.
I completely agree with Heglars point, I think we should be doing some action ourselves in our lifestyles, but what we really need to do is fight the root of the evil, target the biggest culprit. Our society needs to function with fossil fuels in some areas and that’s okay, what isn’t okay is the sheer ecological footprint mega corporations leave behind. Nothing significant will change if we just haul a tote bag to Publix every other day, what really needs to be done is the taking of action against the system, the blame needs to shifted on them, they should be held accountable, as they are the reason we, the planet, are struggling.
