So I took this class not only to try again to pass it, but also to get more information on social work that I didn’t get at first. Also maybe figure out what field of social work I want to be in. There are several reasons people become social workers , but my reason is to help people. I want to use my experience of being a social worker to help make a difference in people’s lives. Some people may think well what is social work? To me social work is to help individuals, groups , and families to prevent and cope with problems in their everyday lives. Social work is all about helping people who need it the most. Growing up I never really understood how to help people. But, as a young kid my mom worked with people who couldn’t do for themselves. Such as bathing, eating, talking and going to the restroom on their own. I would always go to work with her on the weekends to see how she would do her job. I would always say “momma, I don’t see how you can do this.” So in some way I always wanted to take after my mom and help people. Since my senior year in high school I was starting to plan what I wanted to do after high school , so I got in touch with my high school counselor to talk about a career that I could take on to help people. I feel that everyone deserves help, not only adults but children as well .Even though being a social worker can cause stress just by who you are working with, I feel that it is all worth it in the real world. Because you never know what people might go through. As a teenager social work is something that I am drawn to. I never thought about being a social worker because I was setting out to be a nurse. Just because people would say “you would make a lot of money being a nurse.” So I always went with that. But I realized I should go with what I want to do in life. I really just want to help people. I wanted to help protect people’s dignity. Mainly people who are most vulnerable. I want to help and provide help that I nor the people in my life got when we really needed it. There’s a lot of shame around social workers in the US. So I think that by being a social worker I could support and educate around those issues. I want to change some of the public views about how social workers treat children and young people with mental health issues. I’ve had personal experiences with social work Having to see my parents battle in court over me for years . My dad had drinking and drug problems and still does till this day. I stopped spending weekends with my dad at 12 years old. And as a child you don’t understand why you can’t see your father. It is just called “he has to go away for a while”. I haven’t seen my half sister in over 7 years because of the choices that my dad made. Realizing how that is and growing up without a father makes me want to help and prevent kids from struggling with trauma like that. Social work to me is not a job. It is all about the love you have for people and how caring you are . Social work will show me what so many different things in the world that people go through and make me look at life differently.. More throughout this semester I want to understand more of the different fields of social work to figure out what kind of social worker I want to be. But as of right now social work of all kinds is where I want to be. My long term goal is to graduate from with a BSW in the next two years. For some reason this year I haveMary Baldwin University been looking more into the clinical social work field . Just because not only do I want to work with kids. I want to work with kids in the hospital , mental health and address the needs of the kids in these types of situations. I feel that social work was something that I was born to do. Just because I love to help people and help them understand that in this world, don’t fear because you are never alone. There is always someone out here willing to help. Some people also don’t know when to throw in the towel and get some help. So it is up to me and us social workers to help these people all over the world.This is why I choose social work as my future career. involves the use of eco-friendly practices believes it doesn’t matter where a person lives in relation to their situation is not important in social work.
