How to Organize Your Critical Analysis:
Introduction:
In your introduction, you must provide background Information on the article/text you are analyzing. Present the title and author of the work. What is the article about? What is the intended purpose of the article or point of view of the author? The last sentence of the introduction should be your thesis.
Thesis:
State at least 3 rhetorical strategies (i.e. emotional appeals, statistical evidence, expert opinions, logic, rhetorical questioning, persuasion, etc.) you believe the author uses to support his point of view or achieve his or her goal in the text.
Format:
The author employs (x, y, z) in the text to suggest (the author’s point of view or thesis)
Example: The author uses logical appeals, statistics, and sarcasm to unveil the futility of humans seeking to control nature.
Body Paragraphs –
Your body paragraphs should focus on analyzing the text. Remember you are not summarizing but writing your opinion about the author’s writing style and the argument he or she makes. The paragraphs should focus on your thesis. You may also wish to focus on:
Is the information organized clearly?
Do you find the author to be credible? Why or why not?
Is the information biased or one-sided?
Are sources used effectively and cited in the article? Do NOT focus on whether or not you agree
or disagree with the author’s point of view.
You should use actual quotes from the article to support your critical analysis.
Body Paragraph 1-
Topic sentence- Write a sentence based on your first rhetorical strategy that the author uses that you will discuss. Elaborate on the strategy and your thoughts about whether the author achieves his or her purpose. Use quotes from the text as evidence.
Body Paragraph 2-
Topic sentence- Write a sentence based on your second rhetorical strategy that the author uses that you will discuss. Elaborate on the strategy and your thoughts about whether the author accomplishes his or her purpose. Use quotes as evidence.
Body Paragraph 3-
Topic sentence- Write a sentence based on your third rhetorical strategy that the author uses that you will discuss. Elaborate on the strategy and your thoughts about whether the author achieves his or her purpose. Use quotes as evidence.
Conclusion-
Summarize your key points. Restate your thesis. Point out the broader implications of the topics discussed in the article.
