Anthropology Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Argues that Single Stories
“Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie argues that single stories are “dangerous” because they limit people’s understanding of others. Moreover, single stories are dangerous since they make people have stereotypes concerning others, which may be negative and incomplete. This may contribute to robbing people of dignity. Also, single stories may make recognizing equality among humanity difficult since they emphasize how people are different rather than similar. Adichie emphasizes that people develop a narrow perspective when they only hear a single narrative about a person, culture, or place (TED, 12:09). This simplifies complex realities and fails to capture the diversity and complexity of human experiences, thus making single stories dangerous.
During her trip to Mexico, Adichie realizes the power and impact of single stories. She initially held preconceived notions about Mexicans based on the single story she had been exposed to about poverty, danger, and backwardness(TED, 8:40). However, her experiences in Mexico shattered these stereotypes as she encountered a vibrant, diverse, and culturally rich country. This made Adichie realize the importance of seeking multiple perspectives and the harm caused by single stories.
One can avoid creating or recreating single stories about others by seeking out diverse sources of information and engaging with different perspectives. This source includes literature, documentaries, and personal interactions. Reading literature, watching films, and engaging in diverse conversations can help people have diverse knowledge and perceptions concerning others. Diversification of sources will enhance resistance to the urge to stereotype an entire group based on limited information. This will promote an accurate understanding of our diverse world.”
Task: your job is to re-write this text above, using your own words after listening to the TED because the tutor who did it for me used words that were very similar to the ones mentioned in the TED talk. and the professor said “the words are too similar to the ones she uses in the video. Even if you do not use her exact words, close paraphrasing counts as plagiarism. Once you review plagiarism, you can rewrite this response, email it to me.”
