Write a paper entitled “This Profession in Relation to My True Self”
In The Courage to Teach (2007), Parker Palmer writes that “the personal can never be divorced from the professional” (p. xi). He asserts that the true professional who is at home in his or her work operates from a place of authenticity within. This paper asks you to contemplate and answer the question: “At this point in your career as a student, how do you know this profession will be the best embodiment of your true self?”
This paper is intended to engage you deeply in a self-reflective and discovery process. While I will certainly read and react to what you write, it is especially important that you are candid with yourself. The point is not to present yourself as someone who already has the attributes of a counselor, or even the true self of a counselor, but more to look at where you are now so that you can capitalize on your strengths and face areas of need. Some successful students have written this paper like a debate with themselves: an essay that considers why they should, and should not, choose this profession, because of how they currently know themselves.
Address the following in writing your paper:
• Think of one or two times in the recent past when you were aware of feeling like you
were doing what you were born to do. Describe these, and identify what it was in you that connected so well to what you were doing. If you can’t think of a time that you had this feeling, write about what you imagine it would be like, and what you would be like, if a time like this had happened.
• Think of one or two times in the recent past when you felt really “off” or disconnected
from what you were doing, perhaps thinking that you weren’t where you were meant to
be at all. Describe these, and see if you can identify what was missing for you in those
experiences.
Being completely honest with yourself, what are the real reasons you are now
considering counseling as a career, besides wanting to help others? How will it serve
you?
What populations you would see yourself best, and worst, at developing rapport with ?
How come? What is it about you that would have to change if you were to work with
populations where you see less of a match?
What are your fears about the future, and how does becoming a counseling professional
help you (or not) with those fears? What in you is likely to need attention if you are to be blazingly successful as a student of counseling as well as a new professional
