When you write a cause-and-effect essay, you will probably use the words affect and effect quite often. For this reason, it is important that you know the difference between affect and effect.
Affect, usually a verb, means “to influence”.
For example: Linda Hasselstrom believes that carrying a gun has affected her life in a positive way.
Effect, usually a noun, means “a result”.
For example: Linda Hasselstrom believes that carrying a gun has had a positive effect on her life .
Note: Effect can also be a verb meaning “to bring about”. For example: She worked hard to effect change in the community.
