English 313 Summer 2023 Inquiry 2: Tracking Research Tracking Research What? This essay, which should be roughly 4 – 6 pages long, is a study of the way ideas drawn from academic, clinical, or theoretical research are transformed (and sometimes distorted) by a change of form (design, genre, rhetorical modes) and context (audience, purpose, time, and so on). Those content in news programs and message boards, retweeted with comments, or mentioned briefly in an article for a more general audience came from somewhere. Finding the real, primary source can be a bit of an adventure. Much like a game of telephone, information changes as it filters through different sources. For this paper, you will select at least three texts: two secondary sources reporting on a primary text, and the primary source being reported on. For example, you might observe and analyze a morning news segment reporting a study detailing the health benefits of avocados. You would then find that “study” and read it for yourself. What changes in that information’s journey from point A to point B? You might also find another source—say a newspaper article reporting on the original study—and make comparisons between it and the other sources. A “picture” of the relationship between the three sources might look like this: B (morning news segment reporting on the original study) / / A (original study) C (newspaper article reporting on the original study) Or, you might find the trajectory of sources you find looks like this: A (original study) → B (newspaper article reporting on the original study) → C (morning news segment reporting on the original study but using the newspaper article as its main source) However your essay turns out, to complete it you will draw on additional research you have conducted, as well as what you have learned about rhetorical analysis, to describe your observations, analyze what they might mean, and argue for the factual accuracy or inaccuracy from source to source. Your three chosen sources should relate to your discipline. Why? In short, this project is a chance for you to hone your observational abilities, practice critical thinking, and examine the world around you, especially with regard to the interests and practices of your particular field. You will practice effective research and ethical source work. You will work on effectively drafting and structuring a rhetorical document of your own. This assignment will primarily support three of the course learning outcomes: ● Identify and explain a problem or issue, recognize and evaluate concepts and assumptions from multiple perspectives, ask relevant questions, analyze appropriate sources, and articulate logical, well-organized, and innovative conclusions. [Core Learning Outcome: Critical Thinking] ● Organize content cohesively, use compelling language and delivery that is audience appropriate, incorporate supporting materials to establish credibility, and reinforce a memorable central message with civility. [Core Learning Outcome: Information Literacy] How? There are a variety of ways to approach this assignment. For instance, after choosing a piece of information relevant to your field, but directed towards a general audience (a tweet, an article from a popular source, etc.), you might track backwards, finding the original source. Or, you might start at the beginning, by finding a primary piece of research (a landmark study or a primary text), and finding its expression in a subsequent iterations, examining what this secondary source reveals. When comparing primary and secondary sources, look for shifts in language, context, and purpose of the information. Keep an eye out for ● ● ● ● ● ● Changes in genre, purpose, and audience Factual accuracy/inaccuracy from source to source How genre affects the presentation of content Ways language and tone are altered and what that reveals about audience, purpose, context What information is included (& what information is left out) and what that reveals Artistic proofs in the secondary sources (how do authors inform their audience?) Once you’ve closely read/observed the text, take notes of those observations—using the note-taking method that works best for you. This will help you to consider why these shifts occur. What role does audience play? What role does genre play? What context impacts or influences an author’s rhetorical choices? Write some paragraphs based on your notes that answer these questions, giving specific examples to illustrate your responses. These will comprise your earliest drafts of the material. When?
