The Economic and Social Impact of COVID 19
Introduction Comparing and contrasting helps us answer questions and make better decisions at work and at home. In our careers, we might compare and contrast two job offers to decide which one to accept, or compare and contrast two brands of accounting software to decide which one is better suited to our business’s needs. In our everyday lives, we compare products and services to decide which ones to buy, such as clothing, food, or legal advice. In each case, we use comparison and contrast skills to help us effectively evaluate options. Chapter 8: Comparing and Contrasting—Computers and Technology provides instruction on comparison-contrast concepts and organizational patterns. Instructions This week, you will plan and begin writing the essay you will complete in Week 4. 1. Planning will involve careful selection of your topic (what you will write about), audience (for whom you will write), and purpose (why you are writing on that topic for that audience). 2. Research will enhance your prior knowledge and help you write from an educated, credible perspective. We’ll share all of this in the Week 3 Discussion. 3. Begin writing your essay later this week, so you can share your rough draft in the Week 4 Discussion. Topic and Audience: To write a practical and valuable compare and contrast essay, identify a real-world audience who needs to decide between two options. This audience might consist of colleagues at work, customers you serve, or even your own family members. Each of the following sample topics is accompanied by a question a writer might ask about the topic. • Two options to improve employee satisfaction at your employer (Should we raise salaries or increase flexibility?) • • • • • • Two options to improve product quality or process effectiveness at your employer (Should we invest in robotics or skilled workers in our production facility?) Two options to make your place of employment more environmentally responsible (Is it better to put solar panels on the roof or paint it with a reflective coating?) Two options to deal with employee health and/or safety concerns at your employer (Should we add warning signs or increase training to reduce injuries?) Employment as a temp, consultant, or gig worker versus working in a traditional, permanent position (What are the key benefits and drawbacks of temporary work as compared to full-time employment? Volunteering versus giving financial support to a local not-for-profit organization (Is it better to give time or money?) Investing your money to start your own new business, or investing it in the stock market or some other business opportunity (Is it better to invest in yourself or others?) Feel free to customize a topic to fit your interests, experience, and audience. Engage in the Week 3 Discussion to get feedback on your choice, and communicate with your professor if you have any questions. Research: Select and use at least two credible sources of information related to your topic. You are encouraged to explore the many high-quality sources available in the DeVry Library databases, but you may also use high-quality internet sources as well. Organization: Focus your comparison on three or four criteria or qualities held by each of the things you are comparing. For example, one could compare and contrast virtual to onsite Human Resources services based on their cost-efficiency, effectiveness, and employee satisfaction. Your essay should not be merely a list of pros and cons or personal likes and dislikes. Comparison and contrast essays typically follow either a block or point-by-point organization. Here are models for the virtual HR topic. Expectations: Successful assignments will • • • • • • • • • focus on an appropriate topic for comparison; feature an introduction that clarifies the scope, audience, and significance of the analysis and provide a clear thesis statement indicating a recommendation; analyze three to four appropriate criteria for the comparison and contrast; use and cite at least two credible sources for supporting evidence or examples; conclude with an overall assessment and recommendation; include a references page listing all sources used with proper APA citations; be typed and submitted as a Microsoft Word document (.docx); follow current APA guidelines for essay format; be three to four double-spaced pages (750–1,000 words), not including the title or references page; and What topic have you chosen? What causes and effects will you be exploring related to this topic: I have chosen to write about an increase in crime and homelessness in my region. the cause will be covid and the subsequent aftermath i.e. effects following What do you wish to learn from writing and researching on this topic? What essential question do you wish to answer? I would like to delve more into the grit of it and the impact it had and has on my community, Honestly, I don’t think it will answer too many questions being so shrouded in lies and mystery. With whom do you wish to share this information? In other words, who is your intended audience? I’m just trying to share this information with my peers or those in my actual Generation the Actual Gen Z, not this new baby group. 1. What is your tentative thesis? the effects on the economy and the indirect, and direct effect it has had on my community as a whole the problem was the shutdown and culling of small businesses and then subsequently pushing ridiculous amounts of money into starving communities, causing a rebound effect that resulted in a higher crime and homelessness rate. 2.
