I agree that the developmental model is adaptable and facilitates individualized supervisee support across a broad range of developmental tasks/domains. The Loganbill developmental model asserts that supervisees are in one of three stages of development: stagnation, confusion, or integration (Bernard & Goodyear, 2019). A supervisor can provide targeted support based on the developmental stage of the supervisee across any one of the eight core areas of counselor education (e.g., professional identity, assessment, human growth and development, cultural competence, etc.) by identifying their stage of development. To clarify, the Integrated Developmental Model is also a developmental model and the most widely used (Bernard & Goodyear, 2019). The IDM seeks to identify the supervisee’s developmental “level” (i.e., levels 1-4) and their awareness, motivation, and autonomy within that level. The goal is for the supervisee to reach autonomy in level 4 of each counseling domain. That domain could be their intervention skill competence (i.e., psychotherapy), but the IDM is not specific to psychotherapy and is applicable across all eight counseling domains. The other developmental supervision models are the Systemic-Cognitive model and the Reflective model (Bernard & Goodyear, 2019). My supervision style integrates the humanistic and reflective models; psychotherapy and developmental-based models.
