Ecology Deep Water Horizon Lab Research
Goal for ecology this year Students will go out into the site at the beginning of the semester and generate a hypothesis for our research at the creek site. They will have 2 weeks, while we do other labs, to research our ecotype and generate a reason for their hypothesis. This will make the hypothesis flow from physical site data and research found on the web/in the library (this will also give me the ability to discuss meaningful research versus wiki info) and will lead to a more meaningful discussion of the gained data and final conclusions of the semester-long experiment. THAT will make a learning experience that incorporates the full spectrum of cognitive development! Week one. Watch Deep water horizon , students write a summary of the movie and research one coastal area that was impacted by the spill. The outline below is a guide to your paper- see the rubric on the last page Damage to the abiotic portion of the site a. location of the site b. original description of the site c. immediate aftermath of the spill (weeks 1-6) d. damage at 5-12 weeks, include in this the work that was done to limit the spill damage. e. current status, to include any additional cleanup efforts and level of restoration (how well did the cleanup work). Damage to ONE species f. choose ONE animal in the location chosen and briefly describe the impact that the spill had on this species; were they killed immediately? What percent of the population was impacted? Did their food source die out, leaving to the slow starvation of the species? Have they recovered? Personal impact due to the event g. what is your personal viewpoint about the actual Deep Water Horizon (not just the movie depiction) oil spill? How does this knowledge make you feel? What measures would you take considering this situation? Remember, every action has an equal but opposite reaction- if you ban oil drilling in the gulf, where would we obtain our oil? In light of the current world/political maelstrom, how can America stay strong against countries who hate us? How can we balance the needs of the Homo sapiens, with the needs of other species? h. has this experience had an impact of the Christian worldview that DBU desires to develop in our students? If so, how? If not, why? I. Remember to include a work cited page, listing all of your sources.
