A data warehouse is a means of storing massive amounts of data in an electronic format and is the source of information for a decision support system (DSS) (Barreto, 2019). Data warehouses may be characterized as subject-oriented, non-volatile, integrated, and time-variant (Barreto, 2019; Martin, 2019).

The main differences between a data warehouse and a transactional database relate to the underlying tables (Brown, 2022). The tables underlying a transactional database are designed to be updated quickly and efficiently, while the tables for data warehouses are developed to allow for effective reading and analysis of stored data (Brown, 2022). Transactional databases are composed of smaller, normalized tables (Brown, 2022). These tables must be joined together to effectively analyze data, and the process is excessively inefficient.
