Assumptions and Barriers to Health

It can be challenging to identify personal biases present when providing care. The nurse’s view is subjective and personal perception critically can affect providing adequate care to the population being served. It is important to be aware of these implicit biases and stereotypes to provide fair, compassionate, respectful, and empathetic care. Furthermore, recognition of these stereotypes and biases can aid the nurse in identifying barriers to health as a result of these assumptions present within a community.

The goal of providing effective interventions requires the involvement of cultural considerations. The nurse identifying cultural practices and beliefs can assist in addressing fears concerning healthcare and overcoming barriers to health. The nurse investing time to understand attitudes toward healthcare, the significance of understanding the role of healthcare, and the presence of disease and illness within the target demographic all assist in devising interventions that are appropriate for the community (Truong et al., 2014). This aids in reinforcing the need for continued education and awareness of cultures within the community to provide culturally competent care for the community. For example, language barriers can become a hindrance to accessibility and/or create fears regarding seeking healthcare within the United States. The information collected can aid public health nurses in advocating for local, state, and federal representation and policy change to support culturally competent care being delivered (Truong et al., 2014). The combined use of identification of personal biases, acknowledgment of biases and stereotypes present within a community, education regarding present cultures within a community, and advocacy for public health policy representation and change all aid in providing culturally competent care.
