Part II: The goals of toxicology are to identify the toxicities that chemicals produce and to determine the dose of the chemical that induces toxic effects.

Historically, animal research has been performed to determine the toxic dose and toxic effects of chemicals. As time has gone by and technology has improved, alternatives to animal testing have been developed to explore the toxicity of chemicals. Discuss the pros and cons of these testing models. Do you believe there would be situations where one model would be more favorable to be used than another? Explain your response.

Hello everyone, my name is Matthew Morris and am currently stationed in Las Vegas NV with the Air Force. My goals are to finish my master’s in occupational health and safety so that after retiring I can continue my career in safety as a civilian.

Utilizing animals such as mice is due to their similarities to humans regarding chemical effects. Giving scientists the ability to conduct research and experiments without risking human lives. Using animals for research has been a practice that has been used for decades to expedite the creation of new medications and in the development of exposure regulations. The newer methods of research are showing great promise in the world of toxicology but in my opinion these methods are still a bit too new to completely abandon animal testing.

The most noteworthy con to this type of experimentation is the ethical issue. This process can seem cruel and inhumane. However, it has been acceptable because people don’t view mice and other small animals in the same light as domestic animals. I believe that alternative methods developed using new technology can be used to greatly reduce the need for animal testing. If other methods can be implemented to have a more scientific understanding before animal testing, it could reduce the amount of animals used.
