Data Warehouse vs Production Database
Prompt: In Modules 2 and 3 of A Guide to SQL, 10th ed., it describes database design and discusses tables, relationships, entities, and columns or attributes of tables. There are two main kinds of databases in business today – production databases and data warehouses. Production databases are meant for writing and updating, while a data warehouse is mainly for reading and historical purposes along with data analysis.
The data warehouse is a copy of the production information and typically stored longer for archival purposes and merging with 3rd party data for analysis. Performance would be hampered on the production database if the queries run on a large amount of data. Separate hardware is used to manage and run queries on the data warehouse to increase performance for queries and not damage performance on the production system.
