Scenario: Using Observational Learning to Train a Team on the New Electronic Health Records Software
We will be transitioning to a new electronic health records software to enhance our efficiency and patient care on the telemetry nursing floor. As the new training manager, I believe that utilizing observational learning is the ideal approach to help in mastering this software smoothly and effectively. Observational learning, also known as social learning theory, involves learning by observing others and the consequences of their actions. This approach can be highly impactful in the training process. Let’s delve into how we can apply two key concepts of observational learning to facilitate our software training:
Modeling
One of the central concepts of observational learning is modeling, which involves demonstrating the desired behavior for others to imitate. In our case, I will create step-by-step video tutorials that showcase the correct and efficient ways to use the new software. These tutorials will cover everything from logging in to inputting patient data and generating reports(Samadbeik et al. 2021). By visually demonstrating the process, team members can see firsthand how the software functions and understand the correct procedures.
Mirror Neurons
Mirror neurons are specialized brain cells that fire both when we act and when we see someone else perform the same action. These neurons play a crucial role in observational learning, as they allow us to empathize and imitate the actions of others. To leverage mirror neurons in our training, I will arrange live training sessions where experienced team members proficiently use the software(Charpentier et al., 2020). As our team observes their colleagues seamlessly navigate the software, their mirror neurons will activate, facilitating the internalization of the actions and making it easier to replicate the same actions later.
Imitation and Prosocial Modeling
Observational learning emphasizes the power of imitation and the impact of prosocial modeling. Prosocial modeling involves observing positive behaviors and their favorable outcomes. During our training, I will share success stories of team members who have already mastered the software, highlighting the benefits they’ve experienced in terms of time saved, accuracy, and improved patient care (Kang et al., 2021). These stories will serve as inspiration and motivation for our team to engage in the learning process with enthusiasm and dedication.
The observational learning approach, enriched by these concepts will be a powerful tool in our software training journey. By providing visual demonstrations, facilitating observation of successful colleagues, and reinforcing progress, we can ensure a smooth transition to the new electronic health records software. The team’s dedication and collaborative learning will leadto mastery in no time.
