How to Effectively Supervise
According to Portland Community College’s Continuous Learning for Individuals, Management, and Business (CLIMB) Institute, the key qualities of a successful supervisor are: 1) Effective Communication; 2) Leadership; 3) Empathy and Compassion; 4) Conflict Resolution; 5) Ability to Delegate; 6) Problem Solving; 7) Time and Priority Management, and 8) Confidence (2019). All very important, but somewhat hard for some supervisors to obtain.
It has further been expressed that employees with a higher level of workplace trust and positive relationships have a lower risk of developing mental health issues. In a study with 28,900 participants spanning across 35 European countries, Kizuki and Fujiwara (2020) concluded that more positive supervisor behavior increases workplace trust and, in return, contributes to a higher level of psychological well-being.
In a study conducted by Patterson (2019) focusing on social workers stepping into a supervisory role for the first time, it was noted that if managers do not have the time for reflection within their own work schedule, it is less likely that they will quickly adopt a supervision style which is open and inquiring. The lack of reflection time could have a negative effect on a supervisor being open and willing to change their views on what is an appropriate course of action in future situations.
