An important part of good economics is looking to the real world for evidence to test our theories. Your task for this assignment is to use economic theory AND historical evidence to evaluate the validity of the following question: “How does the quality of institutions explain why some capitalist economies have seen substantial growth in living standards over time while other capitalist economies have not?” To answer this question, you will need to show a firm understanding of why and how the three defining institutions of capitalism, when working effectively, should drive advances in living standards; how and why these institutions do not always work effectively; and what other supporting institutions are necessary for successful capitalism and the role these institutions play. You will need to combine theory with evidence across time and across countries to make your case. .
