English 1A/1AS Outline (or Rough Draft, a.k.a. “Child’s Draft”)
Outline (or Rough Draft, a.k.a. “Child’s Draft”)
Description
For this first step of Essay 1, you really just need to get yourself started on the writing. Get ideas down on paper. Think about which ideas from Atomic Habits have made an impression on you (as far as you’ve read, up to page 100), and what thoughts or reactions you have. Do you find yourself agreeing with what Clear is putting forward?
Your choice: Some writers prefer to start the writing process with an outline; others make a “brain dump” onto the page, writing a very rough draft from scratch. For our first stage of Essay 1, you can get to know which kind of writer you are by trying both methods.
Your assignment here is to write either
an outline, or
a rough draft (what Anne Lamott calls a “child’s draft” or a “shitty rough draft”)
For many, the steps that work well are brainstorming, then outlining, then starting to write a draft. That’s the method I’m going to emphasize in the modules. However, if you’re comfortable jumping right in to writing a draft, you can do that here.
The purpose of this assignment is to start the process of writing Essay 1, and in doing so to get to know the methods of writing that work best for you.
