Compose an argument of proposal that explains how the problem or conflict at the heart of your issue
should be resolved. What policies or practices should be adopted? Who should be responsible for
adopting them?
Your essay should do the following:
• Make a strong claim regarding an effective and feasible course of action that should be adopted
in response to your issue.
• Clearly but briefly describe the specific aspects of the conflict that your proposal addresses.
Draw on the research from papers One and Two. This should be limited to the introduction.
• Base your argument in sound reasoning and evidence, and in sources that explicitly offer
arguments of proposal on your issue. Your evidence should show that your solution is likely to
be effective in resolving the issue and that it is feasible.
• Acknowledge differing viewpoints. Explain why your proposed solution is preferable to other
possible solutions that you have found in your research. You might also anticipate and respond
to possible objections to your proposed solution. Be willing to acknowledge the limitations or
shortcomings of your proposed solution.
• Tailor your proposal to your anticipated audience: What groups or institutions need to be
addressed to resolve your issue? How can you balance their interests?
• Sources should be briefly introduced with author and genre when they are first used.
• Each body paragraph should include at least one direct quotation from a source; however, note
that only using one quote or paraphrase in a source probably won’t provide sufficient support.
You will likely use some combination of quotes, paraphrases, and summaries in each body
paragraph.
• Use a minimum of four sources, including a minimum of two academic / scholarly sources. Other
sources should have a clearly established claim to authority or credibility and should be properly
contextualized. Look for sources that explicitly offer proposals connected to your issue. It is
acceptable to use some of the same sources that you used in Research Papers One, Two, and
Three, but you should also continue to broaden your research.
The essay should include:
• A central claim proposing ways of addressing the problem, expressed in a thesis statement
• A focused, cohesive, logical structure that includes unified, well-developed paragraphs
• Sufficient evidence and explanation
• Proper integration and citation of sources using MLA 8th edition.
• Clear, engaging prose that adopts a tone appropriate to academic writing
• Prose reasonably free of errors in grammar, punctuation, and usage
The paper should be four full pages of text in length minimum, plus works cited pages.
