This week there is no Quiz. There is only this Assignment and the Discussion. It is part of the overall plan of the University to develop the skills of finding and discerning reliable information, ingesting that information, using what is relevant to a chosen topic, thinking deeply for oneself concerning the information, and constructing a well-written communication that is intelligible to others. To one degree or another, these contribute to the basic skills of living our several lives – personal, professional, and civic lives.
This assignment supports CO 1, CO 2, CO 3 & CO 4.
Assignment Overview
The goal of this assignment is to write a short history of a favorite genre of music.
Pick what you like to listen to – rock, country, hip hop, pop – whatever it might be.
Research the early days of it. Delve into who, what, where, when, why, and how.
Tell about at least 3 artists or groups that were early in the genre’s history.
Tell about 3 further groups or artists that have been active in the past and/or are current.
Assignment Requirements
Sources
Requirements include a minimum of 5 sources for the writing and at least 3 music video references for the music.
The writing sources must include the use of two materials from the class as follows:
“Switched on Pop” by Sloan and Harding
“Breaking Records: 100 Years of Hits” by William Ruhlmann
All sources must each have at least one in-text reference in the body of the essay.
All sources used must be listed in the source section at the end of the essay. Each source must have at least one in-text citation.
All sources must be of educational integrity. No Wikipedia or other “wiki –“ sites. The use of an online encyclopedia is only okay if used to investigate and use the sources of the article(s) found there. Do not just reference an encyclopedia, but if you investigate other sources found there, you must reference the encyclopedia as well. The encyclopedia is the only source that is not required to be used in-text.
Content and Formatting
The essay must include an introductory paragraph, at least 3 paragraphs for the body of the essay, and a concluding paragraph.
It also must include a proper title page and centered title (APA) or a heading with the centered title (MLA).
To find how to format both the body of the essay and the source list visit the Trefry Library by clicking on Resources > Writing@APUS or APA Style or MLA Style. This course uses the latest edition of both styles. Points will be deducted for formatting omissions or formatting mistakes. Some find it easier to model their essay on an example following the formatting there.
