Discussion Instructions
Remember what we learned about how to analyze literature:
Read the key passages several times: Reading once only gives you the basics – you will miss a lot!
Engage with the text: Annotate it, or at the very least take notes on things you notice (and note where you found those things). You’ll need this information later.
Keep track of patterns: Do certain words show up a few times? Are there symbols that seem important? Are there repeating ideas?
Look for “golden lines” – lines that you find particularly beautiful, interesting, or meaningful.
Deeply examine and question literary features, such as
the title or section titles
the setting
the character or characters
the structural element of the story (the beginning, significant middle structure, or end)
the line of the plot (it breaks chronological order at times)
the style of the language or dialogue
use of metaphor
the overall theme
the point of view
the tone
This is how you get to know literature deeply, and your thinking and notes will help you with later assignments!

pick one of the following types of papers to write, or propose your own topic to me.
Possible topic 1: Pick two poems from Poets.org by the same author and compare and contrast them. What are the similarities and differences between the poems? Do the two poems give a sense of this author’s focus or style? Remember to analyze the poems in terms of imagery, figures of speech, sounds, rhythm and form (you don’t have to use all of these in your paper, but you should use several). Also, see if you can do a little research into the author to help back up your observations. Note that on Poets.org you can search for specific poets (Links to an external site.).
Possible topic 2: Pick two poems from Poets.org that use a similar theme (for example, poems about growing up, about being Black in America, or about music) and compare and contrast them. Do the two poems make similar or different observations about their themes? Do they do so in similar or different ways? Remember to analyze the poems in terms of imagery, figures of speech, sounds, rhythm and form (you don’t have to use all of these in your paper, but you should use several). Also, see if you can do a little research into the author to help back up your observations. Note that in the materials for teachers (Links to an external site.) section of Poets.org you can find poems on specific themes.
Possible topic 3: Pick two poems from Poets.org that use one of the same standard forms (for example, sonnet (Links to an external site.), sestina (Links to an external site.), villanelle (Links to an external site.)) and compare and contrast them.
Possible topic 4: Propose your own topic! Want to write about something that doesn’t fit into the above categories? Contact me through the Canvas inbox to propose your own topic.
Note: You are welcome to use a poem that we already read, or find a new one, as long as the poem you choose is from Poets.org.
Quoting and Works Cited
In this paper, you must utilize at least 1 outside sources that you find through your research and I recommend at least 8 quotations total from the works of literature and outside sources you use.
Total number of outside research sources (not poems) = at least 1
Total number of quotes = at least 8
Use MLA format (Links to an external site.) for the paper, quotations, citations and Works Cited page. Information for how to do in-text citations and Works Cited pages can be found at the Purdue OWL (Links to an external site.) – a great source of information for lots of writing-related things.
Structure
Structure is important! Don’t just dash off a paper without careful planning.
Start with an introduction paragraph that provides background information about your story.
End your introduction with a thesis statement (one sentence stating the main point you are making in your paper). You must have a point that you are trying to make!
The majority of your paper will be the body, a series of paragraphs that analyze the story and support your thesis statement.
Each body paragraph must have topic sentences that clearly states the main point you are making in that paragraph. Usually, it’s best if these topic sentences are the first or second sentence of your paper.
At the end you need one conclusion paragraph that reinforces and expands on your thesis statement.
Take care to plan enough paragraphs to reach the required paper length!
The paper must conform to standard style guidelines.
