“Spirituality is the aspect of humanity that refers to the way individuals seek and express meaning and purpose and the way they experience their connectedness to the moment, to self, to others, to nature, and to the significant or sacred” ( Evans, 2024 page 309). Christians view spiritual care as encompassing the nurturing and support of an individual’s spiritual well-being. Spiritual care is based on the theology that all people are created in the image of God. “This premise of showing respect, compassion, dignity, and empathy to others is supported by the scriptural premise of the two great commandments found in the New Testament. The first great commandment, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind” (Deuteronomy 6:5; Matthew 22:37) (Evans, 2024 309) My definition of spiritual care aligns with the Christian definition. To support my own spiritual care I focus on prayer and scripture study.I attend worship services and fellowship with members of my congregation. I rely on guidance from the Holy Ghost when making important decisions.

The Christian definition of spiritual care is providing care that connects individuals with God via bible reading and discussion, prayer, and exhibiting a compassionate presence. A big part of this care is collaborating with the church community and operators to assist with the provision of spiritual care that is either rude or forced. This definition aligns with the Christian definition because as a practicing Christian, providing holistic care to patients and families requires attention to patients’ physical, mental, and spiritual aspects. Additionally, providing spiritual care requires that the caregiver not only believes that he/she is imparting, but the actions taken in delivering such care are respectful and authentic to the needs of the patient and family. The connection with a church community is important because spiritual care cannot be delivered in a vacuum, but should find support in the church community and clergy who often have the expertise and capacity to provide for the spiritual needs of persons. The Bible is the guidebook to give the recipe that grounds the delivery of spiritual care in the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth. In many instances the need that a person has only requires a prayer. Other times it requires deep conversations and a should to lean on because the struggle or the pain are too difficult to bear.

In the Christian faith, spiritual care encompasses various activities and practices that help nurture and support an individual’s spiritual well-being. The ultimate objective of spiritual care is to help individuals deepen their connection with their faith, find meaning and purpose in life, and achieve greater inner peace and fulfillment.

As a healthcare professional, I firmly believe that spiritual care is critical to providing comprehensive care to patients. Spiritual care does not necessarily involve religious beliefs but encompasses all aspects of an individual’s spirituality, including their sense of purpose and meaning, values, relationships, and overall well-being. In my experience, addressing patients’ spiritual needs can have a significant impact on their physical and emotional health, as it helps them cope with illness, reduce anxiety and depression, and find a sense of peace and acceptance. Therefore, I always strive to provide spiritual support to my patients, regardless of their religious or cultural background, and ensure that their spiritual needs are integrated into their care plan. It recognizes the human desire for meaning and purpose and helps individuals navigate their faith journey in a manner that aligns with their values, regardless of their spiritual beliefs. It is a compassionate and empathetic approach that offers guidance, support, and a safe space for individuals to explore and express their spirituality.

Spiritual care as a general term is a holistic approach providing healthcare to meet the spiritual needs of our patients. It is aimed at nurturing a patient’s spiritual well-being, regardless of religion. Exploring purpose and meaning, connections with a higher power, and providing emotional support are just a few examples of how a nurse can provide spiritual care to their patients. The ultimate goal of spiritual care is to promote inner peace, resilience, and a sense of connection to something greater than oneself. In Christian theology, spiritual care is grounded in the idea of imago Dei, as we’ve previously discussed in this class. In this idea, every human is made in the image of God and therefore should be treated with respect, compassion, dignity, and empathy. My own definition of spiritual care pretty closely aligns with the Christian definition. I think it’s important for spiritual care to be included in the care of our patients. Spiritual care is just as important as the physical care we provide. It’s important to understand our own worldview and how we view spiritual care in order to best serve our patients.

If a patient was facing an ethical dilemma, I would collaborate with the specialty doctor or team to be sure we lay out all the pros and cons of whatever intervention is causing the dilemma. There is a difference between laying the options on the table and being sure that the patient UNDERSTANDS the difference of the two options. Providing scenarios of what their life (or lack of life) would be if and when choosing one intervention vs. the other. When all the scenarios are explained and understood, I would offer spiritual guidance from a chaplain or explain to them that they are more than welcome to bring in their out pastor. There are ethical committees in certain hospitals that can also be offered for guidance. In any circumstance, it is imperative for hospital management to take not of the working conditions and address issues related to seniority by providing regular ethics training and group reflection sessions to maintain nurses’ ethical knowledge in hospital practice (Nopita et al., 2023). This is important because I do not feel that nurses get a lot of training initially to deal with ethical dilemmas, especially with different cultural beliefs that we might not see often. If there was someone in my care with a different view, i would take time from my day to research the basic core beliefs of that religion or culture and incorporate their beliefs as long as it maintains the safety of my patient. Since I am not very religious, what i would want for myself is just to have a person that I can call my friend, which is my nurse. I would want them to treat me as if I was their family member and offer my their advice and compassion. I would want to feel safe with her, with my words, thoughts and intentions. I wouldn’t want any judgment because at this point in my life I would feel that I would be on my death bed and still want to be treated with dignity and integrity. When a health care provider does his or her job with skill, competence, and understanding, most people will be shaped by gratitude, joy, and trust (Evans, 2024).

When supporting a patient with an ethical dilemma, I think it’s important to understand their worldview. Completing the spiritual assessment and understanding what a patient views as spiritual care is important in treating the whole patient. If I were a patient, I would want my provider to listen to me, first of all. I’d want them to exhibit a true understanding of my worldview and where I am coming from. I wouldn’t want advice from the provider, necessarily. I would want to know my options and know the risks and benefits of all options in order to make the most informed decision. I wouldn’t want to feel judged or ridiculed for any decision I was considering making. Ethical dilemma’s a challenging enough and it’s never black and white as to what the best option is. In making a decision during an ethical dilemma, I would want to feel secure in the option I was making without feeling judgment from my care team. I would want my care team to include my family and listen to the concerns of myself and my family.
