Stakeholder Beliefs
It is important not only to fully understand how a union is organized, structured, and governed but also to fully understand how each stakeholder (labor and management) works within a union. Not all union members are supportive of unions, while others would not work anywhere else. What are the differences that union and non-union members appreciate or do not appreciate about unions? There are multiple considerations when discussing a stakeholder’s beliefs of unions.
Some of those additional considerations are listed below and illustrated in Figure 4:
1. Status (Bargaining/Nonbargaining): A bargaining status is typically a nonmanagement employee, while a non-bargaining status is typically management
2. Management/ Non-management: Management is typically one in a formal leadership role who makes decisions, such as a CEO, while a non-management employee is a non-decision maker.
3. Seniority: Length of time within an organization, position, or both. In a union, it is considered a privileged position because the more seniority, the more benefit.
4. Position: Your job title and duties.

Considerations when Discussing a Stakeholder’s Beliefs of Unions
Another example of what people consider when supporting unions or not is their socioeconomic background. Unions provide pay that is in line with private sector counterparts with certain protections that the private sector does not have, such as tenure, healthcare, etc. Unions tend to be generational. Someone that has worked in a union and sees the benefit of the union will impress that upon their children, keeping a steady flow of supportive, loyal workers. Seniority also plays a part. The longer one is with a union, the more they have at stake, giving the union more support. The more seniority one has to a union and the more vested they are, the more they tend to be loyal. Not only does seniority help the employee, but it helps the union because now you have a skilled union member to help teach new employees the trade, all while supporting the union.
The point is people have different thoughts about unions. People are the cornerstone of a union. The considerations listed above are just a few to consider when putting together stakeholder beliefs. Therefore, it is not only important to think about the operation of a union, think about the people. Without them, there is no union!
