Planning Instruction lesson plan
Think utopian classroom…the perfect classroom as you begin to plan your instruction. Remember this is a planning working document. Based on Dr. Cecil’s definition, try to put in a form of literacy each day. Dr Nancy Cecil ‘s definition of literacy states: “Literacy includes reading, listening, speaking, writing, viewing, and visually representing.” You may look at the Lesson Plan Template 5E Model Working Document as an example.
*Viewing in literacy is “An active process of attending and comprehending visual media, such as television, advertising images, films, diagrams, symbols, photographs, videos, drama, drawings, sculpture and paintings. ‘ So ‘viewing’ is about ‘reading’ – analyzing, evaluating and appreciating – visual texts.”
*Visual representing is teaches students how to recognize and use textual clues (eg heading, sub- headings, graphics). Ideally, these features support the reader of the text; particularly long, complex texts.
Select 1 TEKS from your content area that you will be teaching. Select either 6, 7 or 8 if you are wanting to teach middle school; or 9, 10, 11, 12 if you wanting to teach high school. DO NOT select elementary school. Create the Content Objective and Language Objective. Begin planning student engagement using Dr. Cecil’s definition of literacy. In other words, plan student engagement to include reading, listening, speaking, writing, viewing and visually representing.
1) Copy and paste the TEKS in the Lesson Plan Template.
2) Content Objective – You may use the acronyms TSW (The student will) or TLW (The learner will be able to) as you rewrite the TEKS in student friendly terms.
3) Language Objective – What do you want the student to master? This may be the final product/exam to be created/taken to show mastery of the skill. This is written in student friendly terms.
4) Look at what strategies you will use to engage your students in learning the TEKS. Look at Kagan Cooperative Learning Strategies. You will have to research instructional strategies, and adapt the strategy to your grade level.
5) Write at least 2 student engagement activities on your lesson plan template. Do you want student engagement activity to activate prior knowledge? Do you want student engagement activity at the end to extend the learning?
