Media Studies in Research and Designs
Michael Strangelove (2015), writing in his “Introduction” to Post-TV: Piracy, Cord-Cutting and the Future of Television, shares how “Six years after YouTube came out of nowhere, over half of all global consumer Internet traffic was taken up with delivering movies and television shows to online viewers” (3). Mid-twentieth century media theorist Marshall McLuhan once prophesied that, “The Medium is the message.” His theorization explained that it is not the content so much as the mechanism of delivery that propels mass media and captivates audiences; but is that the total story of how we are literally watching digital culture evolve?
In this course we explore contemporary media habits while training ourselves through time-testing methods. Our core texts examine what we now might consider “TV” in its past, present, and present-future form. If television is the campfire flame that lights the global village, and the Internet provides the oxygen to fan the flame, then where, when, and how should students, scholars, and researchers explore mediated forms of communication?
Examine your personal history of media use, and contrast it to how we might look to study media in the present day, and future context. This is a personal reflection, therefore, it is understood that not all information is fact-based and may contain limitations including personal bias. Consider and list the kinds of questions we should be asking about media, the effects of media, media audiences, media contexts, and the roles and goals media plays in shaping not only US culture but also social influence across the globe.
Part 2
Instructions
In this course, students will conceptualize, develop, revise, and submit a survey questionnaire relevant to a media studies research project. While course materials like readings and videos could be considered primary resources, students should also look to previous courses, personal passions, and professional areas of interest or expertise to guide the development of a central focus for this project. Rather than simply “writing questions,” this 5-week survey project is designed to simulate the expectations of real-world rigor. Week 1 requires locating a central issue or area of interest, defining any problem or reason for gathering information in the form of survey sampling, and then an initial direction for this academic investigation. It is understood that ideas and processes will refine and could alter a little, or a lot, based upon instructor feedback during subsequent weeks.
After watching the selected academic videos for Week 1, write a description of the topic you are planning to investigate that goes beyond “brainstorming”. Your project plan ideas should allow the strategic plan to proceed in Week 2. The report should run between 500 – 750 words, formatted according to APA Style, with cover page, and references page
