The term paper for this class includes the following assignments: Dance History term research paper (60 points total) – Including topic (5 points) works cited to date (5 points) and thesis statement (10 points), rough draft (15 points), as well as the actual term research paper (25 points).

This specific assignment requires you to decide on the topic of your term paper. 5 points Your topic can be anything related to the subject of dance. Obviously in a class titles “History of Dance” you will be studying a chronological progression of dance as an art form throughout history. That being said I am not limiting you to deciding on a specific period of dance in history. Realize that we are starting in the primitive and ancient civilizations of western culture so if your topic is more current you will have to do research in addition to what we are covering in the text which may be an earlier time period. At this early juncture in the term paper process try to narrow your search to a topic you may be interested in such as an artist (Michael Jackson?) or style of dance (Hip hop?), a period of dance (disco?) or even a subject related to dance (dance therapy?) the list is endless!  You can change your topic but I am "pushing" you to commit to something related to dance that you can see spending time researching this semester. Once you begin in earnest with your works cited and developing your thesis statement you may find that your topic changes and that is fine and part of the process! Always feel free to "run it by me" and I will give you my "take" but in the end it's up to you! Start early….this is a semester long project….enjoy the journey!

This particular assignment is asking for your term paper thesis statement. 10 points  This should be a one to two paragraph statement that describes what you are going to be writing about and how you are going to ultimately "defend" your argument. For example, your thesis may be that Michael Jackson is the greatest dancer of all time. And you are going to then prove it by showing his early emulation of James Brown when he was learning his craft as a member of the Jackson 5. Or perhaps you want to argue that the term 'contemporary dance' relates more to the theatrical dance styles of ballet, jazz and modern dance rather than the social dance styles of street dance and Latin dance. Or perhaps you want to prove that Bachata is the "new" Salsa and want to use the recent trend in club social dancing as a platform for this movement. So, the topic is really up to you. What you now must do is decide on what type of research is going to help you support your thesis statement! Remember you can always revise or even change completely your thesis statement as your research evolves (be sure to advise me of this so that I may give you the “ok”). 

This particular assignment is asking you for your rough draft.15 points Your rough draft should include your thesis statement, the introductory and concluding paragraphs of your term paper as well as an outline of the body of your term paper where you are supporting the thesis statement (Remember your thesis statement can have “evolved” with my knowledge but the rough draft is a working copy of your final term paper and therefore cannot have a different topic from what you submit as your term paper).

This assignment is the submission of your term paper based on your thesis statement! 25 points The paper's submission should include your thesis statement and works cited as well as the body of your paper. Although there is no specific designated length the fact that you are defending your initial thesis statement should take at least several well-constructed paragraphs. The formatting should follow MLA 9 style.

1) The Cumbia is a very well known dance. 

a. A Cumbia is a tribute to liberty.

b. A Cumbia started in Columbia and Panama, and spread throughout other latin countries.

c. It is known today as a social and popular dance. 

2) Selena's go to dance was the Cumbia. 

a. Her mom taught her "the washing machine" as a child. 

b. At her shows, she would mainly dance Cumbria's and that is what she was known for. 

c. Bidi bidi bom bom was based off of a Cumbia. 

3) A Cumbia could be danced in various ways. 

a. Can be danced as beginners. 

b. Can be exaggerative by those familiar. 

c. Can be an intimate and touching dance.

Overall, a Cumbia is the best type of Latin dance to date. The simplicity put into it yet carelessness that goes into it is beautiful. This dance can be danced by a beginner and made to look amazing, or it can be taken for an exaggerative turn and be danced all out for a more up beat dance.
