- To complete the essay, you will follow these steps:
- Choose a brief “text” – whether written, spoken, visual, or digital – to analyze. Examples of texts include newspaper articles or editorials, magazine or television advertisements, university-wide emails, bumper stickers, political speeches, etc. Provide a link to or embed an image of this text in your paper.
- Briefly summarize the text and describe the elements of its rhetorical situation – purpose, genre, media, surrounding events and contexts, etc. – that are most relevant to your analysis.
Identify the arguments being made by this text – whether they are directly stated or only implied. Assess which arguments are most/least convincing and describe how and why. Provide evidence from the text (in the form of brief quotes or descriptions) that lead you to make these conclusions.
Identify which audiences are addressed by this text (and/or which audiences are ignored). How do you know? Are these the appropriate audiences for the author/speaker to address, given their purpose? Provide specific evidence from the text (in the form of brief quotes or descriptions) that lead you to make these conclusions.
- Identify at least three of the rhetorical techniques and appeals used in the text, employing terms from material provided in the Module 1 Reading and Resources. Which are most effective? How and why? Provide specific evidence from the text (in the form of brief quotes or descriptions) that lead you to make these conclusions.
- For this activity, identify the text you plan to analyze for the Rhetorical Analysis Essay. Remember, you can choose any type of text you like for this assignment. Provide a link to the text (or embed an image, if applicable). Then, write an addressing the following:
