Identify authorial messages and articulate genre conventions
Generate written and organizational content for the GA
Prompt
Your goal in the GA is to craft an essay in which you synthesize interpretations of two speculative fiction texts based on genre conventions that track across readings with related themes. For this sketch, draw on all that you’ve written so far to assemble a portfolio-style document (basically, a collection of revised writing that’s organized and easy to navigate).
To receive complete credit, Your in-process sketch should include four or more of the following elements (pick which ones you want, and note which ones you picked at the top of the document):
A body paragraph from your in-process GA in which you isolate details from one chosen text (a short story) and link those details to specific genre conventions of speculative fiction (what conventions? This is where you’ll have to do some thinking.)
An essay outline that includes at least 6 paragraphs, with section headings, topic sentences and explanations of what each paragraph/section contributes to the argument as a whole
A paragraph you generated or revised from a WARP exercise you already completed (such as the one from last week).
A paragraph you generated or revised from a WARP exercise you haven’t yet completed.
A body paragraph that defines two key terms (in addition to the main key term of your reading track) that are related to genre conventions of speculative fiction (or two of your reading track’s themes), and explains how these terms apply to one or more of the stories you’ve chosen.
A one-page or longer introduction section that introduces the primary sources (the short stories), key terms, and main questions of the essay, and ends with a thesis statement.
A paragraph in which you describe the imagined audience of one or more of the stories you’ve selected, and analyze the significance of one or more rhetorical strategies used to reach that audience.
A paragraph in which you quote and summarize a secondary source, and apply one of its key terms (preferably one related to the genre of speculative fiction, or from your reading track) to one of the primary sources.
A body paragraph that does something not on this list, but contributes to the essay’s overall argument in some way.
Body paragraphs should be substantial in length (200-250 words is a good benchmark).
Components and Specifications
The total word count of this sketch is loose, but you should aim to produce a document of 900-1,000 words. If you have the required above elements but have not yet met the word count, try to expand on what you have until you’re approaching this number. It’s okay if the material is somewhat loose and baggy.
