COMMENT 1:
With most jobs when there is question or concern that needs to be addressed, you work up the chain of command. In nursing the chain of command beings with the assistant, then progresses to staff nurse, charge nurse, nursing supervisors, staff development coordinator, assistant director, director of nursing, all the way to the top with the administrator. Each link of the chain is responsible for a certain task. The Director of Nurses requires educational qualifications in most facilities. Most DON positions require a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. Along with a BSN degree, management skills and leadership skills are necessary skills to have to get these positions. The director of Nurses oversees the nursing staff and overall nursing operation. Their duties include evaluating and providing direction for all nursing staff. They establish goals for the department and enforce and create compliance policies. DON must be good at multitasking, organization, written and verbal communication, manage budgets, have strong critical thinking skills, and have the ability to work in a fast-paced environment. A good DON will show great leadership skills and supervisory ability. DON are in a position where other nurses look up to them for guidance and support. The ability to provide leadership, guidance, and support for the staff under you aligns with the values of the Christian worldview. Be a steward is a Christian value that is seen in any nursing profess. The drive to help others and be of serves to others are both that of nursing and Christianity.
COMMENT 2:
One formal leadership role in nursing is that of a Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL). The CNL is a master’s-prepared nurse who oversees the integration of care for a specific set of patients and actively provides direct patient care in complex situations. Essential responsibilities of a CNL include coordinating patient care, ensuring continuity of care across different healthcare settings, and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to optimize patient outcomes. CNLs are also responsible for implementing evidence-based practices to improve patient care quality and safety, mentoring staff, and engaging in performance improvement initiatives. Educational preparation for a CNL requires a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree with a specialization in Clinical Nurse Leadership. This includes coursework in advanced clinical skills, healthcare systems, leadership, and clinical outcomes management, often supplemented by a capstone project or clinical practicum. Leadership traits, styles, and qualities essential for a CNL include strong communication skills, the ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, and a commitment to continuous learning and evidence-based practice. Key leadership styles beneficial for CNLs include transformational leadership, which fosters motivation and enhances the morale and performance of team members, and servant leadership, which prioritizes the needs of patients and staff. These traits and styles align with the Christian worldview by emphasizing service to others, compassionate care, ethical behavior, and stewardship of resources. A CNL who embodies these values can create a caring, respectful, and ethically sound healthcare environment that aligns with the principles of Christian leadership and holistic care.
COMMENT 3:
The Chief Nursing Officer or CNO is a leader for nursing staff. They ensure high patient care standards that is reflected within their organization. Their responsibilities include strategic planning, quality improvement, staff management, budget oversight, regulatory compliance, collaboration with healthcare leaders, and advocacy for nurses. The required education typically includes a BSN, an MSN or healthcare administration degree, and often a DNP or PhD, along with RN licensure and administrative certification. These qualifications ensure that CNOs have the expertise needed to lead effectively and implement transformational leadership practices (Burke & Erickson, 2020). Essential leadership traits required to be successful in this role are visionary thinking, effective communication, empathy, integrity, decisiveness, collaborative leadership, and resilience. A unique approach is necessary when leading with Christian values and principles. This approach is one that is grounded in service and humility. They align with Christian worldview by practicing servant leadership, showing compassion, making ethical decisions, advocating for the vulnerable and stewardship that reflects core values of service and care for others. These traits emphasize service, compassion, ethical integrity, stewardship, community building, and advocacy for justice, reflecting the commitment to serving others, ethical conduct, and support for within the healthcare setting (Phillips, 2023). This is even more proof how nurses are important, as they exemplify values of compassion, service and ethical care, which not only align with Christian principles but also enhance patient outcomes and create a supportive healthcare environment.
COMMENT 4:
As a leader in my current workplace, I can utilize various advocacy strategies to create positive change and improve patient outcomes. One effective strategy is to actively engage in interprofessional collaboration and communication (Fox et al., 2021). By fostering strong relationships with colleagues from different disciplines, I can advocate for patient-centered care and ensure that all members of the healthcare team are working together towards common goals. This may involve organizing interdisciplinary meetings or committees to discuss patient care plans, identify areas for improvement, and implement evidence-based practices. Additionally, I can serve as a liaison between frontline staff and upper management, advocating for resources, policy changes, or process improvements that support safe and effective patient care.
Another advocacy strategy is to champion initiatives that promote health equity and address disparities within our patient population. This may involve advocating for culturally competent care practices, implementing screening programs for underserved communities, or partnering with community organizations to address social determinants of health (Abbasinia et al., 2020). By raising awareness of healthcare disparities and advocating for systemic changes, I can help ensure that all patients receive equitable access to high-quality care. Additionally, I can advocate for staff development opportunities, such as training on implicit bias or cultural humility, to enhance the cultural competence of our workforce. Through these advocacy efforts, I can contribute to creating a more inclusive and equitable healthcare environment, ultimately improving patient outcomes and fostering a culture of excellence.
COMMENT 5:
Teamwork and collaboration go a long way in the emergency department. We are constantly having to communicate as a team and trust in each other during critical situations, such as when a person arrives/goes into cardiac arrest. Being a positive team member and knowing my own strengths and weaknesses also creates positive change. If I know that bagging a patient is not my strong suite and I am assigned this role, it is my responsibility to speak up and let the code leader know that I do not feel comfortable in that role and to be assigned a different one. With being straight forward and performing roles we know we are good at can further increase the patient outcome. Being in an environment with positive leadership influences nurses to improve quality of care given (Kim et al., 2022). Even though I do not hold a leadership job role, I can be still be a leader by possessing leadership skills and speaking up when necessary. Being a leader, nurses can create a safe and healthy environment that focuses on patient-centered and cost-effective care (Hult et al., 2023).
COMMENT 6:
Effective leadership involves empowering others, continuous learning, clear communication, and embracing innovation to drive positive changes in healthcare settings. Engaging team members early in initiatives can lead to more successful outcomes.
Here are some strategies to create positive change: Encourage team members to voice their ideas and concerns, fostering a culture of collaboration and shared decision-making. Provide ongoing training and professional development opportunities to enhance the team’s skills and knowledge.
Maintain open lines of communication with staff, patients, and other stakeholders to ensure transparency and trust. Advocate for the adoption of new technologies and practices that can improve patient care and operational efficiency.
Reflecting on a personal leadership experience, I recall when I led a project to implement a new patient care protocol. The outcome was a more streamlined process that improved patient satisfaction. However, if I could do it differently, I would involve more front-line staff in the planning phase to gain diverse insights and foster greater buy-in. At my job now, we have regular team meetings to share updates, address concerns, and provide transparency. Our manager emphasized that change was inevitable but assured everyone that we would navigate it together. She listened to team members’ feedback and acknowledged their fears and uncertainties, encouraged an open-door policy, and allowed anyone to approach her with questions or concerns. It has had a positive impact and a better workplace environment.
