This assignment will help you think about instruction writing as a form of technical writing. As you may have reviewed, instruction writing can seem like one of the easiest forms of writing to complete but is quite complicated to accomplish well.

To help you prepare for instructional writing, you will review and analyze several examples of instructions. For this assignment, as you examine the different sets of instructions linked below, you should consider the purpose of the instructions, the target audience, and the contexts in which users might encounter the instructions. Consider why an audience would find the instructions effective or ineffective. You should place yourself into the role of the audience to “review” and evaluate these samples. Then, follow up with identifying specifically what makes some of the instructions effective and other samples less effective. Give suggestions on how to make the instructions more effective. Consider not just the text, but the organization of information, the visual components, and other various design elements, such as color or contrast.
