The purpose of this discussion is to give you an opportunity to develop relationships with your peers, develop your critical reading skills, and practice evaluating sources and integrating information from sources into your own writing.

SKILLS

This discussion will help you practice the following skills:

• applying your critical reading strategies by learning from the interpretations of others;
• integrating information from sources into your own writing;
• distinguishing your writing and thinking from the writing and thinking of others by using integration best practices, like attributive tags;
• composing initial responses that address the prompt in full; and
• responding substantively to your peers’ posts.

KNOWLEDGE:

• understand the importance of community in successful learning environments; and
• evaluating the credibility of your own views and the views of others.

Task

Please write at least a a 300-word initial response to one of the following questions regarding your reading in The Omnivore’s Dilemma and post it by Wednesday. Make specific reference to the text, your own experience, and other readings to support your response. These questions are a starting point for our discussion of this text. Once you have made your initial response, you make take the discussion in other directions.

• • Describe how food companies get consumers to eat many more calories than they need in any given meal or on any given day.
  • Discuss why Michael Pollan sees the presence of corn in 25 percent of all supermarket items as a problem.

After you have posted your initial response to one of the questions, please respond to at least three of your peers’ posts by Sunday.

PROCESS
