Instructions: For each question you answer, you should clearly label the question, and answer it as fully as possible. Each section has a word or sentence limit. Some students may need to write more. That’s fine. The objective of this exam is to allow student(s) to illustrate their understanding of the issues brought up in class. Bring the word processed document to class and submit it in order to take the Multiple Choice portion of the exam.
Format: Students will word process this exam in a Microsoft Word accessible document. Number the questions.
Points: Each Questions is worth 10 points. You get 7 points for answering the question completely. 8 -10 points are for depth comprehensiveness.
Part 1
(Choose 3) Instructions: Write 5 – 7 sentences minum for each question you choose. Use quotes in each of your answers.
1. One of the burning questions in space travel is the theme of home, and the paradiox of the traveler. Define “Home” with 2 points, and choose a story which fulfills all two characteristics, and then choose a story whch fulfills none of the characteristics. (Your definiton does not need a quote; each characteristic with its explanation needs a quote – for two quotes for this answer.)
2. In Science Fiction, there is an explicit critique about trying to “fix” nature or “play God.” Choose a story where this happens, and show (1) how the story illustrates characters playing God or trying to “fix” nature, and (2) explain whether you think the story agrees with trying to play God or not (Use two examples to prove your point).
3. What is the essential problem in “To Serve Man”? Find 2 – 3 quotes in the story and use them to argue your answer.
4. What is one kind of non physical darkness experienced in Langford’s “Different Kinds of Darkness”? Explain how it blinds
the character(s). Use two examples to explain your point. Use at least one quote to support your explanation.
5. Part of Science Fiction asks whether the pursuit of Science is destructive or beneficial. Choose a story and show how science has changed the characters or world. Then explain whether you think the change is beneficial or not. Use a quote or two in your answer.
6. What is the significance of the planet’s name For-A-While in Russ’s When It Changed?
7. When your culture changes due to technology, (1) do you change for the better or the worse, (2) choose two stories from the reading which illustrate these points. Use a quote from each story as proof.
8. In “Burning Chrome,” give two examples how are the characters still human despite their mechanical and technological
modifcations? In the last part explain why you think they are still human. For each example, use a quote as proof; for your
explanation, no quote is needed.

9. In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Birthmark,” how is Aylmer a Mad Scientist?
10. One of the themes this semester has been, “How do cultures clash in Science Fiction stories?” Choose one of the following stories and explain the competing cultures in the story. (“Driftglass,” “Kirinyaga,” “When It Changed”) In explaining the competing cultures, argue which culture you think should win out and why.
