In this assignment, you will analyze two versions of a popular song of your choice. Your goal is to create a descriptive form chart that identifies and compares the major structural components of the original and cover versions of the song. Through this analysis, you will demonstrate your understanding of the musical elements discussed in class.
1.Your chosen songs may be from any popular music genre of any era, but they must include vocals, with at least one version be performed by a North America artist (from Canada, the USA, or Mexico), and be between 2:30 and 5:00 minutes long. You may not choose a song discussed in class so far.
oPlease include a link to whichever versions you reference in your analysis (i.e., Spotify, apple music, or YouTube.
oIf you are unsure if your song choice(s) fits the parameter, feel free to email Prof. McLaren.
2.Create a descriptive form chart that MUST include the following elements for both songs:
1.Lyrics
2.Form (verse, chorus, etc)
3.Instrumentation
4.Vocal Performance
5.Tempo/Groove
OPTIONAL – According to your own musical knowledge and expertise, you may want to include details of additional musical elements (e.g., production techniques, musical key/harmonies, meter, performance techniques, artist’s background) this is encouraged but not required.
- You can use the format of form charts created or discussed in class in Week 3 and 4, (templates and examples will be put on Quercus closer to the due date) or design a different visual representation.
4.Your chart must include terminology and vocabulary discussed in class to describe each element.
5.In addition to describing the above elements throughout the song, highlight similarities and differences between the two versions.
- When relevant, please include timestamps to point out specific moments to which you are referring.
Write a 250-word reflection that addresses how the changes made in the cover version can change the song’s meaning or how it can be interpreted (include at least 3 examples of changes reference in your chart). Include a discussion of which version you prefer and why
