For this assignment, you will write a three- to four-page paper reflecting on one of the core competencies outlined in Health Professions Education: A Bridge to Quality Links to an external site., a 2003 publication by the Institute of Medicine (IOM).

Instructions

1. First, select the tabs to review the five core competencies and choose just one competency for your paper. The competencies and their definitions are cited directly from Chapter 3 of the IOM publication:Provide patient-centered careWork in interdisciplinary teamsEmploy evidence-based practiceApply quality improvementUtilize informatics
2. Once you have selected a competency, write an essay that includes the following elements:
   1. The introduction and background should introduce the topic and IOM competencies overall, describe the selected competency and its significance for patient care, and explain why the competency is relevant to nursing practice.
   2. The body of your essay should answer all of the questions for your selected competency based on your internship experience, use three (or more) recent references as citations (two must be from peer-reviewed journals), include examples from the internship unit, and provide at least one recommendation for possible quality improvement related to the competency and reflections on the unit.
   3. The conclusion should summarize your perspectives on the selected competency for your unit and describe the impact of the information on your own nursing practice in the future, including an answer to the following question: “How would you do things differently to better develop or achieve this core competency on your unit?”
   4. Compile your reference list at the end.

Procedural Notes

Your paper must be three to four pages long.

You must cite at least three sources, two of which must be peer-reviewed publications such as journal articles. Your sources must be recent: i.e., published within the last five years.
