Assignment Description Self Reflection REL 111 Points Possible: 100 In order to engage in the method of reflexive awareness as part of your study of religion, this assignment asks you to reflect on your experiences with religion, how those experiences shaped you, and what your own religious beliefs and practices are. In other words, what is your religious story? When studying religion and interacting with people of other faiths and religious traditions, it is important to be aware of one’s own beliefs and convictions and to understand one’s own religious tradition and its practices. With such an understanding, one can dialogue with others and feel empathy for them in their religious beliefs and practices without feeling threatened. For this essay, you will explore your experiences with religion, both in the past and currently. Ask yourself the following questions: ✓ Were you raised in a religious tradition? What was it? Be specific – if you grew up in a Christian tradition (church), tell me the details of it – were you Roman Catholic, American Baptist, etc. ✓ If you were not raised in a religious tradition, did your family have any spiritual traditions? ✓ How did your specific religious or non-religious upbringing affect your life and your personal and religious identity now? ✓ What is your current religious identity now – what beliefs, practices and values do you have now? Is this different than when you were growing up? ✓ What nurtures you? How do you live or embody these values? What rituals do you participate in – going to church, praying, meditation, walking in nature, etc.? ✓ What is your core belief? What does it mean to be a good person? Does religion play a part in that? Why or why not? What do you believe happens after death? You do not need to answer all of these questions, but do give me a strong, clear picture of your religious background and where you stand now. If you have any questions, let’s discuss them!
