Besides increasing the possibility of addiction and long-term harm to brain development and respiratory health, e-cigarette use is associated with the use of other tobacco products that can do even more damage to the body. Even breathing ecigarette aerosol that someone else has exhaled poses potential health risks. Marijuana Marijuana – also called weed, herb, pot, grass, bud, ganja, Mary Jane, and a vast number of other slang terms is a greenish gray mixture of the dried flowers of the cannabis sativa. Some people smoke marijuana in hand rolled cigarettes called joints; in pipes, bongs, or blunts. Vaporizers are increasingly used to consume marijuana. Short Term Effects – Poor memory and ability to learn – Difficulty in problem solving – Poor muscle coordination – Altered sense of time and space – Anxiety or feelings of paranoia Long Term Effects – Breathing Problems – Memory, learning, and energy impairment – Birth defects in unborn children – Immune system damage Effects Prescription Drugs Frequently Abused • • • • Depressants AKA: Downers, Sleeping Pills These drugs slow brain function. They include sedatives (used to make a person calm and drowsy) and tranquilizers (intended to reduce tension or anxiety) Examples: Xanax, Klonopin, Halcion, Librium, Amytal, Seconal, Zyprexa, Valium Short Term: Slow brain function, pulse and breathing; lowered blood pressure; poor concentration; dizziness; depression; addiction Long Term: Overdose; depression; chronic fatigue; breathing difficulties; cravings; anxiety; panic; insomnia Prescription Drugs Frequently Abused • Opioids and morphine derivatives: Generally referred to as painkillers, these drugs contain opium or opium-like substances and are used to relieve pain. • Examples: Florional with Codeine, Robitussin A-C, Roxanol, Demerol, Duramorph • Short Term: Drowsiness; slowed breathing; constipation; unconsciousness; nausea; coma • Long Term: physical dependence and addiction; overdose.
