In order to complete your Needs Assessment, answer the questions below pertaining to each section for guidance in gathering your data and information. Take careful notes to reference when you prepare your Part 1: Needs Assessment Module Assignment that will be due in Week 3.
1: Investigate and Assess External Factors
Start with external factors that influence the medical/health center that is your focus and nursing staff education needs. Use the following questions to help guide your research:
· What are the major demographics of the population that this medical/health center serves?
· What are the major health problems and diseases in the population that bring patients to the medical/health center?
· Are there implications for the types of nursing staff education and professional development of particular importance as they apply to this patient population?
· How do disease rates in this specific patient population compare to national morbidity and mortality rates?
Research for information, following the points below.
· Describe the community or region (if it serves a larger geographic area) where your selected medical/health center is located:
· Identify demographics of the community or region served by the medical/health center. Include significant characteristics of the population (e.g., age, gender, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, degree of diversity).
· Identify characteristics of the physical setting that might influence needs of the medical/health center or the population it serves (e.g., rural, urban, suburban; climate; economy).
· Identify the range or type of health needs of the patient population of this setting.
· Identify potential education needs for nursing staff of this medical/health center based on these external factors.
· Identify how accreditation/certification might impact a nursing staff education program provided by this medical/health center.
· Identify financial support systems for a nursing staff education program.
· Based on these external factors, identify nursing staff learning needs and gaps to fill.
2: Investigate and Assess Internal Factors
Research internal factors that influence the medical/health center that is your focus and possible nursing staff education needs. Use the following questions to help guide your research:
· What funds are available for nursing staff education/professional development?
· How is this medical/health center funded (i.e., private or public dollars)?
· Who are the major stakeholders involved in nursing staff education and competence, and what are their responsibilities?
Gather information by following the points below.
· Describe the organizational structure of your selected medical/health center. What are the processes for approval of new nursing staff education/professional development programs?
· Describe the political structure of the medical/health center and its current staff nursing education/professional development programs.
· Describe the internal economic situation and its influence on nursing staff education/professional development programs in this medical/health center.
· Explain the general characteristics of patients currently served by this medical/health center and required knowledge or expertise of nursing staff.
· Describe the available resources within the medical/health center, including those devoted specifically to nursing staff education/professional development programs.
· Based on these internal factors, identify nursing staff education/learning needs and program gaps to fill.
3: Complete Your Needs Assessment
Based on the nursing staff education program that you identify for your focus medical/health center, consider these curriculum elements to develop:
· Program-level outcomes
· Target population for your nursing staff education program
· Specific internal and/or external factors that could positively or negatively impact the proposed nursing staff education program
· Rationale for the program you propose.
Use the Module 1 Learning Resources and other current literature, and data from your focus medical/health center, to develop these program elements. Continue to take notes to reference when you prepare your Part 1: Needs Assessment Module Assignment, which is due on Day 7 of Week 3.
