Hello Professor and classmates:

According to Martocchio, discretionary benefits are broken down into broad three categories protection programs, paid time off and services. This benefit is not required by law but is offered to employees at the care of the company. Some examples of discretionary benefits are paid sick leave, paid vacation, reimbursements (tuition or doctor visits), short term disability, retirement, and 401K contributions. Many employees only offer these benefits to employees who are full-time or have been with the company for a certain period. For instance, at my previous job to receive a paid vacation employees would have to be employed with the company for a full year to be eligible. My current job offers dental, tuition, and gym membership reimbursements as a discretionary benefit. These benefits are offered to you at your time of hire without any restriction just because you are employed with the company. As I see it discretionary benefits can be both an entitlement and earned based on performance.
