QUAN 201: Space in transition- Population analysis
PART 1
STEP 1 (Pick the community)
Select a NYC community to analyze for your presentation: A city/town/county/borough/neighborhood
Neighborhoods are often difficult to target in the federal data, because they are usually unofficial boundaries, within a large metropolitan area (i.e., New York, Los Angeles, Boston). NYPMap – City of Neighborhoods lists the various NYC borough neighborhoods and locates them (note what neighborhoods border the one you are researching as you assess the data). Click on the View Community Info button at the top right of map to get neighborhood data.
However, the NYC boroughs are counties, which can be located in the federal data. If you want to write about a neighborhood within a borough, you can note when the data is borough level versus neighborhood level, using the nyc.gov planning website.
STEP 2: (Think about your focus of the presentation)
Your presentation will focus on one characteristic from the census data to tell the story of the community.
- Choose the characteristic you think is most compelling for your story through the Census List, for example, Population, Age, Sex, Race, Households and Housing, Education Attainment, Income/Employment, Place of Birth/Citizenship/Ethnicity
STEP 3 (Find TWO sources and write summary)
- Search the web for multiple (at minimum 2) good media/news sources that provide supportive information about the population of the community you’ve chosen in Step 1 (similar to the Harlem article from the week’s readings).
- Your 200-word summary should summarize the two sources and address how you will use this information in the PowerPoint presentation.
- As you choose your news sources and write your summary, keep in mind the following:
- you will look at Census data for the years 2010, 2020 next week for Part II, and that you are writing about today
- you will be using the Census data to focus on one characteristic for your presentation to tell the story of the community
- the sources should explain some of the population and community changes and characterize the residents’ take on the changes, etc.
In addition to your written summary, include PDFs of your sources, and citations and references using APA style
PART 2
STEP 1 (Download the data)
- Navigate American Fact Finder: US Census Bureau
- Select your community (town, city, county). In the search bar type the community and year you want to explore (e.g.,, Kings County 2010)
- Under 2010 Census, you will see a list of different characteristics to explore (Population, Age, Sex, Race, Households and Housing, …)
- Explore the characteristic you chose in Part 1 (Week 10) and select it. Once the table appears, select Download button (top middle column) to download the Excel Document
- Repeat all steps for Census 2020 (ex type Kings County 2020)
- These two tables must be downloaded so that you may save data and work with statistics below and in Week 12. The tables will also be submitted with your assignment.
STEP 2 (Think critically about the following)
- While you are not asked to submit a written reflection in this step, think critically and sociologically about populations and change, using the data and resources:
- Could it be the result of changing immigration patterns?
- Has the economy of the city improved?
- Has there been a “gentrification” effect?
- Be very mindful of all the possibilities to best investigate the supportive sources
STEP 3 (Calculate STATISTICS )
- Using data from Step 1 (Data Download) for 2010 and 2020,
- Combine the two tables side-by-side
- Calculate Rate of Change as a Percent between the decades of the Census characteristic chosen
Rate of change (new-old)/new * 100 = rate of change in percent. Watch this video for help.
For this part of the assignment you are asked to submit an .xlsx file (Excel) that shows the data that you are using in your analysis, labeled appropriately (i.e. race, year, income, etc.), with the Census values, and the statistical calculations required of rate of change as a percent for each category between 2010 and 2020 data.
PART 3
STEP 1 (Mapping)
- Use Social Explorer through the Baruch Newman Library (databases) to create two (2) meaningful maps for your analysis (see video)
- The maps should be relevant to the story you are looking to tell
- i.e. If you are writing about race, then the maps should be about race
- Maps can be exported as image files that you can then add as an infographic
- The maps should be relevant to the story you are looking to tell
STEP 2 (Charts)
- Use the Census tables collected in Part 2 Step 3 (Week 11) to produce at least three (3) charts/graphs on the data you collected. For example, create a pie chart or bar chart showing the race distribution in your community.
STEP 3 (Submit Word/PDF Narrative)
- Good preparation for the presentation includes having notes and outlines of what will be said during each slide. The students are expected to submit a Word or PDF document of the narration for the PowerPoint Presentation in the separate submission that will be checked for plagiarism.
ALL STUDENTS MUST SUBMIT A COPY OF THEIR NARRATIVE. No grade will be given without submission of the narrative of the presentation.
STEP 4 (Submit PowerPoint Presentation)
Within the presentation, include:
- Articles you found inPART 1
- Data tables you downloaded in WeekPART 2
- Maps you created in Step 1 above
- Charts you created in Step 2 above
- List of references
- 3-5 minute narration (500 words)
PowerPoint Presentation Outline:
- Introduce yourself and provide a brief overview of the community
- Discuss the first impressions of the neighborhood
- What from the data strikes you?
- Walk the audience through a story of how the numbers tell this story of change.
- Integrate the statistics meaningfully throughout the narrative
- Use sources for supportive evidence – avoiding absolute causation; think influence
- The PowerPoint should conclude with some language about the implications of population changes (positive/negative) for the given community
- Are the changes good?
- Will only time tell?
- Why should we care about these changes?
- The presentation should generally tell a story of change told by numbers and supported by critical analysis
