Diversity Playscripts
SCENARIO
After a recent infraction of CLAS at LiveWell, an all directors meeting was held to review the responsibility that management has in practicing culturally responsible actions with their staff. LiveWell has established facility-wide goals to better promote cultural diversity. To help achieve those goals, a series of educational sessions have been set up and volunteers are being sought to work on the educational sessions for management. Since you volunteer at your local theatre, you raise your hand and suggest scenario playscripts to demonstrate culturally responsible actions for LiveWell management. You are praised for your creative suggestion, and a team is assembled to help you with the educational sessions. The first step, however, is developing the playscripts.
INSTRUCTIONS
There are three sets to this assessment. Each set contains a scenario that reflects a healthcare situation with a vulnerable staff member that requires a management response and/or action. You will write a playscript that encompasses the vulnerable staff member’s situation. Use the challenge to envision what might occur in the healthcare situation, and then create a playscript that addresses the challenge in a professional manner and successfully resolves it with proper processes. These portrayals will help inform the LiveWell management attending the educational sessions.
A playscript includes characters who speak lines (dialogue) as well as action lines that fill in the scenario. For example, consider the sample beginning of a playscript for a student enrolling in a college program:
Character List:
- Isabelle = Prospective student
- Billy = College Admission Coordinator
Scene ONE (scene description): Isabelle arrives at the college campus for her appointment in Admissions.
Isabelle: “Hello, my name is Isabelle and I have a 3 pm appointment with Admissions”
Billy: “That’s great, I am Billy and I work in Admissions. Let’s head back to my office, and I’ll see how I can help you.”
Scene TWO (scene description): Isabelle and Billy arrive in Billy’s office…
You will need to develop three play scripts and summaries, one for each of the scenarios below. Use professional language and tone in the playscripts and summaries as well as correct spelling and grammar.
Playscripts
- Include character list and scene description(s) to meet scenario requirements.
- Write dialogue and interactions between characters.
Summaries
- Summarize the purpose of the playscript.
- Provide details on how each playscript will improve the LiveWell management’s understanding of their roles.
Scenarios
The three playscripts should demonstrate proper actions of management when faced with the vulnerable staff member situation described in each scenario. The playscripts should be creative, interesting, and complete.
- You will create three playscripts with a correct, proper, and professional response to the described scenarios.
- At the top of each playscript, write DESCRIPTION of SCENE and then follow with a description of the scene to orient the reader on the chosen subject.
- Then follow with the CHARACTER LIST.
- Finally, write the action and dialogue.
Scenario One: Appraise how the National Standards on Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) guide healthcare organizations for a deaf (hard of hearing) staff member.
Write a healthcare management playscript with at least these three roles. One role is newly hired medical coder, Roberta, who is deaf. The second role is a lead coder, L’ayita, and the third role is the manager of HIM, Tamara. Both Tamara and L’ayita interviewed Roberta one month earlier. The scene occurs in the coding office. Feel free to add additional roles as you see fit.
Scenario Two: Analyze practices that support a culture of diversity. A review of diversity and discrimination case studies may facilitate this.
Write a healthcare management playscript with at least these three roles. One role is employee, Bruce Jordan, who is Jewish. The second role is a greeter at LiveWell’s annual Christmas dinner and celebration. The third role is the Cafeteria Manager at LiveWell. This scenario occurs at the cafeteria entrance at LiveWell. Feel free to add additional roles as you see fit.
Scenario Three: Ensure HIM unit functionality via a Conflict and Grievance resolution process.
Write a healthcare management playscript with at least two roles. One role is Record Analyst Technician, Kathy, who has worked at LiveWell for seven years, and the other role is the Director of HIM, Inez. The scene takes place in the HIM director’s office.
Earlier today, Martreese, a newly hired Record Analyst Technician, joined the Record Analyst Technicians at lunch and shared that she was hired at $22.00 per hour. She then said, “I am so excited to learn how to analyze an electronic health record.” Feel free to add additional roles as you see fit.
