Synthesis Essay Type: Essay Learning Objectives Assessed: 1, 5 Due Date: 16 May 16:00 [Week 12] Weight: 50% Section B: Synthesis Essay (2,000 – 2,500 words) Due Date: (WEEK 12) TASK DESCRIPTION In this assessment, you will discuss a major theme/s that is/are important to you or your professional framework as an emerging language professional – by bringing together key ideas and research findings encountered during your masters course. A ‘theme’ as used here refers to a topic, issue, idea, or point of view that you regard as significant in the discipline of languages and linguistics. A ‘professional framework’ as used here refers to a personalised theoretical interpretation of your masters course – a continuation of Part 3 of the E-Portfolio. The Synthesis Essay can be an independent work, part of the development of your Academic Portfolio [A3], or an Individual Presentation. A complete and accurate reference list must by presented in APA 7 format, giving credit to all the scholars and researchers cited in the text. Consider the following points when developing your theme/s: (1) Identify the major principles, theoretical position/s, and research findings relevant to the theme(s), (2) Explain the implications of these principles in terms of your own practice. Do not talk about (3) DO NOT describe what language professional should od in general Note • • • A Synthesis Essay is not a literature review, but uses the literature to support and exemplify the writer’s position. Over-reliance on secondary sources is not acceptable. We need to be able to see YOUR voice in the essay. You need to provide practical and tangible examples of how YOU can address the posed issues in your teaching with support from the literature. Focusing on a particular teaching context will help you develop this part. For example: Written corrective feedback should be provided to help learners improve their sentence accuracy and become more autonomous learners. In my own teaching context, which is X, Y and Z, I will implement written corrective feedback by collecting students’ main errors and explaining them to the whole class. This will be a class discussion, which, as pointed out by authors X, Y and Z, will benefit students in X, Y and Z. Essay Structure Template Please note that the word count in each section is indicative, not mandatory. 1 * Aim to create a written conversation between your thesis/viewpoint and the sources. Remember that you still need to use academic English following APA formatting guidelines. Pay attention to your paragraph structure, avoiding very lengthy sentences or paragraphs that cover too many ideas. 1. Synthesis essay title • Provide a title for your synthesis essay. The title should capture the gist of your essay. 2. Introduction [approximately 300 words] • • • • Introduce the essay’s purpose and your target teaching context (e.g., instead of ESL students in Australia, focus on adult ESL learners with elementary level). Provide a general overview of the topic. Explain why the topic is important to YOU and why it will be relevant in your current/future teaching. State the thesis/ viewpoint – Be specific and clearly state your position. Provide a brief and overall introduction/information about the 2-4 main references that will guide your essay. 3. Body paragraphs [approximately 1900 words] • • • • • • • • Use titled sub-headings to enhance the clarity of your essay. Make sure your subheadings provide a clear and concise summary of what you will be covering in that part of the essay. Do not use subheadings, such as “part 1”, or “section 2”. Synthesise your chosen references with your viewpoint. Instead of explaining what each study found in very long details, provide a brief overview of the findings, comparing and contrasting them to your experiences and/or other studies. Paraphrase the sources, avoiding direct quotes. Ensure you follow APA 7th guidelines on how to add in-text references. Be explicit on why and how the sources support your thesis or have common features with your thesis. While you will use your main references (presented in the introduction) to guide your essay, you need to add secondary resources to support your claims and contribute to the discussion. Use the concepts that you have acquired throughout your MA program. Discuss the implication(s) of the concept(s) in relation to your own career as a language professional. Provide practical examples of what YOU can do to address the posed topic in a YOUR target teaching context. 4. Conclusion [approximately 300 words] • Restate your thesis in different words. • Note any counter-arguments to the topic. • Point out why your thesis holds more weight. • Discuss how the suggested thesis impacts you and your practice(s) as a language professional. • Point out how you plan to implement what you have discussed in your current and/or future practices. 5. References • Provide a reference list of all works cited within your essay (in-text citations), cited according to APA 7th referencing style. If you choose an older resource, explain why it is still relevant and important (e.g., seminal work in the field).
