12792In this week’s Discussion, you analyzed a time line of events that reflected changing perspectives on substance use, substance misuse, and treatment, and you took note of broad trends in societal attitudes. Where on that time line did you notice shifts in societal philosophies toward substance use and toward people with substance use disorders? How did those changes inform legal, social, or economic approaches to substance use or substance use disorder treatment?

In this Assignment, you use the broad patterns you identified in your Discussion post as a foundation for a deeper analysis of a pivotal event from the time line and explore the implications of the event on social work practice today.

Revisit the Changing Perspectives on Substance Use Over Time media to place your chosen event in context.
Use the Learning Resources and additional research to further explore the chosen event.
Reflect on the societal attitudes and norms behind the event and consider the extent to which those attitudes and norms continue today.

Submit a 2- to 3-page paper in which you:
Describe the event, what led to it, and how it has affected or continues to affect people with substance use disorders.
Explain how treatment for the substance(s) implicated in the event has changed over time.
Discuss the ways in which the event has affected how social workers can work with clients with substance use disorders. Reflect on how societal attitudes and norms connected to this event are influencing practice today.
